BERKELEY, Calif. - California scored two runs in the first, and one more in the second before the Bulldog pitchers settled in, but it was too late as the Bears rolled to a 4-1 win Tuesday night at Evans Diamond behind its own stellar work from the mound.
After the second inning, Fresno State held California without a hit for the remainder of the game in a combined effort between four Bulldog pitchers Tuesday night. Ricky Thomas got the start for Fresno State. The freshman surrendered four hits for three runs, two earned, over the first two innings before retiring the side in the third.
Thomas gave way to Anthony Arias in the fourth, who pitched the next three innings without allowing a hit. Jake Shull and Garrett Mundell each toss one inning to close out the game.
The Bears put their first runner on base since the second inning in the seventh due to the second Bulldog error of the game. Fresno State retired a game-high 14-straight batters in that span. The mishap was manufactured into the second unearned run of the game.
Taylor Tempel led off Tuesday's game getting on base thanks to a Cal error. Kenny Corey, the third batter to the plate in the first picked up the Bulldogs first hit of the game, but the inning was closed out on the next at bat when Taylor Ward hit into a double play.
Cal starter Jeff Bain settled in from there on out. Fresno State did not record its next hit until the ninth. Bain pitched 8 2/3 innings and allowed three hits and one run in the game. Tempel led off the ninth with a single and Ward later hit an RBI single that ended Bain's outing. Dylan Nelson retired the final out after Ward's at-bat for the save.
Fresno State (21-24, 11-10 MW) returns to action on Friday at San Jose State for a three-game series at Municipal Stadium.
