FRESNO, Calif. -- The Fresno State lacrosse team was unable to overcome stretches of five and six unanswered goals against UC Davis on Wednesday evening as the `Dogs fell 11-6 to the Aggies at the Fresno State Soccer & Lacrosse Field.
The Bulldogs (3-9, 1-5 MPSF) opened the game up with a 2-0 advantage through seven minutes on goals from sophomore Caroline Dineen-Carlson and freshman Nicole Ortlieb. On Ortlieb's tally, which extended the `Dogs' lead, senior Marcy Levatino earned her 86th-career point with an assist on the play which moved her past Kara Concheck for first place at Fresno State in career points.
The goal forced a timeout from the Aggies (2-9, 1-2 MPSF) so they could regroup. After a scoreless three minutes out of the break, UC Davis scored four-unanswered goals to close-out the half. Two goals came from Courtney Neff who got the away side on the board just over 10 minutes into the opening period.
Redshirt sophomore goalie Meganne Weissenfels produced one big save after another during the opening half hour to keep the `Dogs' deficit from getting any larger. She recorded seven of her 10 saves on the day during the first half.
The Aggies, though, were able begin the second half just as they ended the first, striking twice within first four minutes to extend their lead to 6-2. Fresno State countered with two goals of its own from freshman Logan Eisinger and junior Anjelica Fuccillo before 10 minutes had passed, but like the first half, UC Davis seized control after allowing two goals.
After neither team could find the back of the net for more than seven minutes, Aggie Elizabeth Landry bookended a stretch of five unanswered goals from UC Davis during a 10-plus minute span to help give her team an 11-4 lead with 3:02 to play. Landry led all scorers with four goals on a game-high 11 shots.
Ortlieb and Eisinger each netted their second goals of the game for the `Dogs during the final minutes of game to make the final score 11-6.
The Bulldogs will return to the Fresno State Soccer & Lacrosse Field on April 12 as the team Cal on Senior Day. The team will honor Levatino and fellow senior Holly Cisneros prior to the 2 p.m., PT, start time.
