LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The National Fastpitch Coaches Association released its Pacific All-Region honors on Thursday afternoon, where Jill Compton was named to the first-team while Brenna Moss and Alyssa Villalpando received second-team accolades.
In recognition for an outstanding performance this season, the three Bulldogs were among 371 players from 153 softball programs in 10 different regions that were chosen to the NFCA Division I All-Region first, second or third team squads. The all-region teams were voted on by NFCA member coaches from each respective region.
An All-Region returnee, Jill Compton was the lone Bulldog named to the All-Region first-team on Thursday morning as the only recipient representing the Mountain West. Of the 12 Pacific Region first-team accolades, Fresno State was among Oregon (6), Cal (3), Washington (1) and the University of Utah (1) recognized by the NFCA.
Compton claimed her first career first-team accolade as a junior right-handed pitcher, after receiving NFCA second-team honors in 2014. The Oceano, Calif., native is joined by Oregon's Cheridan Hawkins as the top two pitchers in the Pacific Region after guiding Fresno State to 28 of its 40 victories in the circle this season.
The NFCA Pacific Region second-team is constructed of 12 individuals from Utah (2), UC Riverside (2), Idaho State University (1), Washington (2), Cal (1) and Mountain West recipients San Jose State (1), New Mexico State (1) and Fresno State (2).
Fresno State's starting centerfielder and leadoff batter Brenna Moss earned her second consecutive NFCA second-team Pacific All-Region honor as a Bulldog senior. Moss guided the conference with a .446 batting average (82-for-184) after recording 11 doubles, three triples and one home run with an on base percentage of .512. After breaking the all-time stolen base record at Fresno State early in the 2015 season, Moss capped the year with team-best of 25 stolen bases.
As a junior transfer from the University of Hawaii, Alyssa Villalpando earned her first career NFCA postseason accolade as a Bulldog. The starting third baseman has helped the `Dogs to 40 wins this season hitting in the six spot for Fresno State with a .358 batting average and a second-best five home runs this season. Villalpando is one of six Bulldogs that have posted an overall on base percentage of .400 or higher and has remained in the top three for best slugging percentage on the team.
Nationally this week, Compton capped the regular season tying for a 17th place ranking after logging eight shutouts and seventh for claiming 28 wins while climbing to 23rd after tossing 235 strikeouts this season. Compton was named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Year while being named to the first-team All-MW squad alongside Moss. As the 13th pick in the third round of the national Fast Pitch College Draft, Moss is one of the national leaders at the plate ranking 28th for a season batting average of .446 and 29th in runs per game (59).
