FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State swimming and diving head coach Jeanne Fleck announced her 2015 recruiting class on Wednesday, which is comprised of six student-athletes that will be joining the Bulldog program for the upcoming 2015-16 school-year.
"This is by far the best recruiting class we've had," Fleck said. "We only graduated three girls off of last year's team and we have six coming in. It is an amazing class and a very exciting time for us."
Joining the Bulldogs are middle distance swimmers Ugne Mazutaityte from Lithuania, Gabbie Libang from Simi Vally, Calif., Samantha Gianetta from Clovis West High School, Emma Momich from Stockton, Calif. and Andrea Tang from Singapore. Momich and Tang are joining the program as walk-ons.
Also joining the program is diver Irian Nikolaeva out of Russia. Nikolaeva, who signed a NLI with Fresno State, comes in as a highly decorated diver who was a member of the Russian National Team. Her tandem diving partner on the Russian National Team, Maria Polyakova who is now at UCLA, won the bronze medal at the 2013 European Championships.
Mazutaityte, a back stroker who also signed a NLI, was a Lithuania national team member and Lithuania national champion. She has previously competed in the world championships in Dubai and her goal is to make the Olympic team. All of her converted teams would be all existing school records.
Tang is a freestyler who recorded a time of 59 seconds on a long course 100 freestyle. She is already enrolled in school and at the time of her enrollment, she asked the admissions office about swimming opportunities at the University. That led to a conversation with the coaching staff and her invitation to join the team as a walk-on. Fleck feels that Tang will be a big help on the relay teams.
Gianetta was named the Clovis West High School Scholar Athlete of the Year for her senior season.
Fleck and the Bulldogs are now beginning to gear up for next season already by working out on campus and swimming for club teams over the summer months.
