The Fresno State soccer team lost on the road 1-0 to Oregon on Sunday afternoon.
EUGENE, Ore. – The Fresno State soccer team lost 1-0 to Oregon on Sunday afternoon at Pape Field in Eugene, Ore. This was the fourth game of a season-opening road trip for the Bulldogs.
Â
"I felt we showed more defensive resilience and organization than our previous matches," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "Oregon was more athletic, but I think we dealt with it quite well. We'll continue to build and work on aspects of the game that we know we need to fix."
Â
For the first time this season, Fresno State (0-4-0) went into halftime without giving up a goal. Freshman goalkeeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann, in her first start of the season, recorded a career high six saves in the match, bringing her total to 15 for the year. This was the first game of the season one goalkeeper played the entire game for the 'Dogs.
Â
"As Marie has grown with the team this season, it's getting to the point where we feel more confident in having her in for the entire game," added Zwaschka.
Â
The Ducks (1-3-0) were able to get one past Berwinkel-Kotmann in the 74th minute when Taylor Kuroda received the ball from Mia Costa on the right side of the box and took the shot from inside the box.
Â
The Ducks led the 'Dogs 20-5 in shots and 7-3 in shots on goal. Fresno State led in corner kicks 7-4. Fresno State's shots on goal came from seniors Alyssa Cruz and Sam Brechmann and junior Angie Weiner.
Â
"We all look forward to coming home and getting to play in front of our home fans," Zwaschka said. "It's been a long and challenging road trip and I know the girls will appreciate playing in front of their friends and family for a couple weeks."
Â
The Bulldogs return to Fresno for their home opener against Cal State Northridge (3-1-0) on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Soccer and Lacrosse Field. Fresno State will then face Cal Poly (1-1-2) at home on Sunday at 7 p.m.
