LOS ANGELES - Fresno State junior Shelbie Holden placed ninth overall in the platform dives on Sunday as a part of the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational in Los Angeles. Though the invite took place over three days, the Bulldogs participated in the Beach Cup in San Diego on Friday and Saturday rather than the full UCLA invite.
"We needed to get practice on the platform dives before the Mountain West Championships next month," Fresno State head diving coach Taryn Patrick said. "[Holden and Ruth] did well, considering they had only done these dives once before. We were able to pinpoint things that they will need to do differently in Conference and that was the main purpose for competing today."
In the prelims, Holden was 10th with a score of 208.75 in the event which allows the top 12 divers to participate in the finals. Her score of 205.55 in the finals gave her a combined score of 414.30 to finish in ninth place overall.
Fresno State senior Lacie Ruth also dove in the prelims, scoring a 185.25 and placing 23rd.
The invite included divers from Azusa Pacific, Cal, Cal Poly, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, CSU Bakersfield, Fresno State, La Verne, San Diego State, San Jose State, UC Davis, UCLA, USC and Utah.
Fresno State's final meet before the Mountain West Championships will be at home against San Jose State on January 30 at noon at the Fresno State Aquatics Center and will air live on the Mountain West Network.
