Bulldogs split Day Two at Willis Invitational

The Fresno State equestrian team defeated South Dakota State 12-4 and fell to No. 5 Baylor 9-5 on Saturday; senior Taylor Brown went undefeated this weekend (6-0) and earned five MOPs
WACO, Texas.- The No. 9 Fresno State equestrian team finished in second place at the Willis Invitational on Saturday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center in Waco, Texas. On Friday, the Bulldogs defeated No. 10 New Mexico State 7-6 and, on Saturday, came out on top over South Dakota State (12-4), but fell to No. 5 Baylor (9-5).

"I am proud of how our team competed today," Fresno State head coach Eric Hubbard said. "You have to give Baylor credit, as it is a strong team to compete against, especially on its own horses. We had some minor mistakes that we need to improve on, but that is common for early in the season. Moving forward, our focus will be on how to handle some different show situations and how we can capitalize on other teams' mistakes."

Senior Taylor Brown led the Bulldogs this weekend, going undefeated in her three Reining and three Horsemanship competitions, as well as earning five Most Outstanding Player honors.

The 'Dogs (2-1) began their competition against South Dakota State (0-3) on Friday afternoon, participating in Equitation on the Flat and Reining, splitting each event 2-2 and heading into Saturday all tied up.

On Saturday morning, Fresno State was able to take control of the meet, sweeping the Jackrabbits 4-0 in both Equitation Over Fences and Horsemanship to put the 'Dogs on top 12-4 overall. Three Bulldogs claimed Most Outstanding Player accolades against SDSU – Brown (Reining and Horsemanship), Sierra Swaffar (Equitation on the Flat) and Paige Pastorino (Equitation Over Fences).

Later on Saturday, the 'Dogs began competition against No. 5 Baylor (3-1) by tying the Bears 2-2 in Equitation Over Fences. Baylor came out on top in Horsemanship and Equitation on the Flat 2-1 in each event.

With the Bulldogs down 6-4 headed into Reining, Brown turned in a Most Outstanding Player performance to earn a point for the 'Dogs and hoping for a comeback, but Baylor took the remaining three points and finished the meet ahead 9-5.

Fresno State came out of the Willis Invitational with a 2-1 record to begin the season and eight Most Outstanding Player accolades, Brown earning five of them. The Bulldogs return to action next weekend in Delaware as they face No. 1 Auburn and Delaware State.
