'Dogs in fourth after day one of Chick-fil-A Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State swimming and diving team opened up their 2016-17 season on Friday, hosting the Chick-fil-A Invitational. The Bulldogs finished day one in fourth place with 275.5 points behind Boise State (587), San Diego State (477.5) and Nevada (362). San Jose State is in fifth place with 255 points and CSU Bakersfield in sixth place with 143 points.

"It was great having five Mountain West teams competing here today," said head coach Jeanne Fleck. "Today was a great starting point for us. In the first session we had some really good highlights."

In the first event of the invitational Fresno State's 200 Medley Relay team of Ugne Mazutaityte, Manuela Mendolicchio, Esme Gullick and Hannah Jarvis took sixth place with a time of 1:46.82.

Freshman standout Manuela Mendolicchio shined on the first day of the invitational. The newcomer tied for first place in the 100 Breaststroke (1:04.75). That was the only first place finish by a Bulldog in the first two sessions. Mendolicchio took sixth place in the 200 IM (1:03.87).Â

Mazutaityte recorded a third place finish in the 100 Backstroke (57.10). The sophomore finished fourth in the 800 Freestyle Relay with Katelin Britton, Kelli Funk and Emily Niles.

"Our freshman Emily Niles and Manuela Mendolicchio, really stepped up for us today," said Fleck. "Our two redshirt seniors Kelly Simmons and Hannah Jarvis also had some great races today despite being out of the pool for an entire year. I was Impressed."

Freshman Emily Niles logged a seventh place finish in the 500 Freestyle and redshirt senior Kelly Simmons finished seventh in the 400 IM.
Senior diver Shelbie Holden placed fifth in the 3M with a score of 265.00.Â

"I'm really excited to see how we perform tomorrow and how we grow throughout the season," said Fleck.
