FRESNO, Calif. - Despite junior center Bego Faz Davalos posting only the second triple-double in Fresno State women's basketball program history, the Bulldogs suffered a 61-57 loss to CSUN at the Save Mart Center on Friday night.
Fresno State (1-2) was led by an outstanding performance from Faz Davalos as the native of San Luis Potosi, Mexico led the way with 18 points, 14 rebounds and added 10 blocks in 30 minutes of action. It was only the second triple-double in Bulldog program history as Faz Davalos has the only other one which she recorded on Dec. 8, 2015 against Cal State Stanislaus.
Redshirt sophomore guard Tory Jacobs added 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Candice White chipped in nine points and seven rebounds while sophomore guard Breanne Knishka had eight points, three rebounds and three assists.
CSUN (2-1) was led in scoring by Hayley Tanabe with 14 points as the freshman went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and she added four rebounds and four assists. Junior forward Tessa Boagni added 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Serafina Maulupe was the third Matador in double figures chipping in 13 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists and Channon Fluker made it four Matadors in double digits as the sophomore center posted a double-double with 12 points and 19 rebounds in 23 minutes of action.
How it happened: The Bulldogs opened the contest with a 18-6 lead after the first quarter thanks to five points from Knishka and five from Jacobs. The 'Dogs extended it to 33-18 at intermission after shooting 7-of-15 from the field (46.7 percent) in the second quarter. The Matadors closed the Bulldogs lead to a nine-point margin after outscoring the 'Dogs 17-11 in the third quarter as the 'Dogs held a 44-35 lead going into the final 10 minutes.
After a layup by Faz Davalos opened the scoring for the 'Dogs in the fourth quarter extending the 'Dogs lead to 11, CSUN responded with a 15-6 run over the ensuing four minutes to cut the 'Dogs lead to two (52-50 ) after a 3-pointer from Boagni. The 'Dogs responded with a layup by Faz Davalos with 5:01 remaining to take a 54-50 lead, but the team went 0-of-8 from the field down the stretch allowing the Matadors to go on a 10-0 run and take a 60-54 lead with 10 seconds remaining. A 3-pointer by White with 3.7 seconds left made it a one-possession game, but a free throw from Maulupe sealed the win for CSUN.

Jaime White, Fresno State head coach
On the key weaknesses and strengths in the second half…
"Weaknesses, obviously, we needed to shoot better. We cannot average 25 percent from the 3 and under 35 percent from the field and that is also what we did against Utah. We need to take high percentage shots and we need to recognize when people are open and run their defense a little bit more by running our offense a little more intense. I thought we did get some open shots; we just need to knock them down. Your open shots are only as good as they are if you make them."
On how it feels to be leading at the half then trail in the last minute…
"It is really frustrating. They did a good job and they played well. Their size and their speed hurt us. I didn't think that we had the intensity to match it in the second half."
On what she takes away from tonight…
"For me, we were outsized and we have to do better than that. We have to figure that out because it is just logistics. I feel like we need to be a little more intense on both ends. Maybe we have taken our experience for granted the last two years, and I think we need to make sure that we are not taking anything for granted and that we are doing everything we can to win ball games. We need to make sure that we play four quarters again and make sure that we play through every play. We just have to be patient. Kids are going to play and have their ups and downs, they are going to miss shots and make mistakes, and we get that. Effort should never waver. Our intensity and our desire to win wavered tonight and it was disappointing."
Junior Center Bego Faz Davalos
On if they expected to win tonight…
"Yeah we did. We definitely need to work harder and learn from this game. I think we need to be tough on ourselves to learn from it. We are a good team, we just need to execute."
Redshirt sophomore guard Tory Jacobs
On the team still learning…
"We are learning, but at this point, we have been here all summer so we should know how to play. Sometimes its not the plays and such, its more of just playing the game of basketball and just playing how we have been playing our whole lives."

- Fresno State held a 34-20 edge in the paint, but allowed 26 offensive rebounds to result in an 11-point advantage for the Matadors in second-chance points.
- The Bulldogs allowed 43 points in the second half (26 in the fourth quarter), the most by an opponent in a half this season.
