‘Dogs surge past Belmont, 62-53

LOS ANGELES - Quick out of the gates, Fresno State never trailed on Friday afternoon as the Bulldogs topped Belmont 62-53 on at Gersten Pavilion in the Loyola Marymount Thanksgiving Classic. Coming off of a triple-double on Nov. 18, junior center Bego Faz Davalos posted 24 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks to lead all players in each category.
Tough defensively through the opening quarter, the Bulldogs held the Bruins to 26.7 percent shooting through the first 10 minutes as they held a 16-9 lead. Fresno State on the other hand scored 12 of its points from beyond the arc with all four triples coming from different Bulldogs.
The 'Dogs then turned to Faz Davalos who 14 of her points during the next 20 minutes of the game as the team shot 13-of-27 (48.1 percent) overall from the field to take a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter.
Belmont managed to pull with four points with just over three minutes remaining but Raven Johnson drove hard to the right side of the lane and laid the ball in to give push the Bulldogs' lead to six. The Bruins would get no closer as Fresno State made six of its final eight free throws down the stretch.
How It Happened:
Belmont forced Fresno State to call a timeout with 8:01 on the clock in the third quarter after a 6-0 Bruin run tied the game at 30-30. Candice White knocked down a 3-pointer out of the stoppage rattled off a 16-2 run during the ensuing five-plus minutes before Belmont called a timeout with 'Dogs leading 46-34.
