‘Dogs top UC Irvine to win LMU Thanksgiving Classic

Faz Davalos, Jacobs and White combine to score 47 of team’s 63 points in 18-point win.
LOS ANGELES – After a back-and-forth opening quarter that ended with a 3-pointer at the buzzer from beyond midcourt, Fresno State outscored UC Irvine by at least five points in each of the final three quarters to defeat the Anteaters 63-45 on Saturday afternoon at Gersten Pavilion in Loyola Marymount Thanksgiving Classic. The win, along with Belmont's win later in the day over LMU gave the Bulldogs the tournament championship.
A day after Bego Faz Davalos eclipsed the 20-point mark, Candice White recorded the first 20-point game of her career to pace the 'Dogs. The sophomore guard was consistent through the contest, with five points in each of the first three quarters and six in the fourth.
Fresno State held the Anteaters to 28.6 percent shooting (8-of-28) from the field during the opening half to take a 30-23 lead into the break. The Bulldogs then allowed UCI to only score seven points in the third quarter to all but put the game away.
How It Happened: Out of the half, Sabrina Engelstad scored on a layup to bring UC Irvine within five. Faz Davalos then scored four of Fresno State's next six points and White bookended a 13-2 run with five points as Fresno State extended its lead to 43-27 late in the third quarter. From that point, the Bulldogs were able to keep the Anteaters at bay, keeping their lead in double figures.
Team Notes:
Have scored 60-plus points in three games this season, all coming in wins.
Outscored UC Irvine 22-9 in second chance points.
First game this season with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio (19-14).
Dished a season high 19 assists.
Fresno State earned the tournament championship as the only team to go unblemished.
