FRESNO, Calif. - Behind a 20-point fourth quarter, the Fresno State women's basketball team was able to shake loose from a tough San Francisco squad for a 61-48 victory on Wednesday at the Save Mart Center to cap a Bulldog basketball doubleheader sweep after the men's team defeated Menlo College 80-67 earlier in the evening.
Fresno State (4-2) won its third game in six days as the stellar play of junior center Bego Faz Davalos continued to be on display as she finished with her fourth double-double of the season recording 16 points, 11 rebounds and added seven blocks in 33 minutes of action.
Redshirt sophomore guard Tory Jacobs led the 'Dogs in scoring for the second time this season scoring a season-high 17 points and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore guard Candice White chipped in 14 points for her fifth game of the season in double-figures and added a career-high nine rebounds. The 'Dogs shot 40 percent (22-55) from the field and hit 7-of-25 from beyond the arc.
How It happened: The Bulldogs opened the contest with a 12-10 lead after the first quarter thanks to five points from Jacobs and a 3-pointer by Breanne Knishka. The 'Dogs opened the second quarter on an 11-2 to extend their lead to 11, but back-to-back 3's by Kalyn Simon helped the Dons end the half on an 8-2 spurt to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 25-20. The Dons tied the score at 35-35 with a 12-4 run in the third quarter, but the 'Dogs answered back with a trey from White with 55 seconds remaining in the quarter. The 'Dogs road the momentum of the 3 into the fourth quarter as they went on an 11-0 run over a five-minute span to take an 11-point lead with just under seven minutes to play.
Team Notes:
Tory Jacobs - 17 points, 5 rebounds
Notched a season-high 17 points ... fourth game in double figures this season.
Bego Faz Davalos – 16 points, 11 rebounds, 7 blocks
Posted her fourth double-double of the season ... the seven blocks tied for her second-most this season... it was her 20th career double-double ... it was her 27th career game with double-figure rebounding total ... it was her 37th career double-figure career scoring performance ... it was the 43rd time in her career she has led Fresno State in rebounding.
Candice White - 14 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal
Her nine rebounds were a new career-best surpassing her previous high of seven against CSUN (11/18/16)... fifth double figure scoring performance this season.

Jaime White, Fresno State head coach
Opening Statement...
"It was a good win for us. San Francisco is a really good team and I thought our kids did a good job preparing for the game. They really understood what the game plan was and they followed through. We just played and I think we did a good job. Emilie Volk gave us a good look tonight, she was on the floor, she was physical and she fought for all five of those fouls. Tory did a good job as well, coming in shooting and giving us a 17-point lift. Our free throws were great, which needs to be a staple of ours. Having Bego in there was good as well as she almost notched a triple-double. She's such a presence in the paint that other kids have to worry and make their outside shots. San Francisco couldn't knock those down."
On the defensive impact tonight...
"I think it's vital. I think it helps our guards when we put more pressure on the ball, knowing that if there is a drive we have someone behind us. We have been working on rotating the backside as well. I always think it starts with defense. Anytime you hold a team to 48 points, you're doing something right. Our kids have fun playing defense so they set the standard initially and then the offense will come."
Junior Center Bego Faz Davalos
On tonight's speed of play and performance…
"We knew they were really fast so we prepared for it. My teammates did a great job passing the ball and finding the right spot, so we were not rushing anything. We knocked it out."
On notching another double-double…
"It feels good, I can't deny it, but I am happier about the win. That was a really good team and I think we did a good job as a team. That was really important for us because we know the next couple games are going to be quite tough as well."
Redshirt sophomore guard Tory Jacobs
On feelings after this win…
"It feels pretty good. We came out fired up. We won the tournament over at LMU and we lost our last game here against CSUN so I think we really wanted this home court win tonight against a very good team like USF."
On how the second half felt…
"It felt pretty good. I think since we've played this season, the second half has been a struggle for us. So to actually come out and get going in the second half felt pretty good."
On having to play at a faster pace against USF's defense…
"I think we did pretty well. Conditioning this year has been on point. The preseason has really helped prepare us for a fast paced game like tonight."
