Huskies close game on 36-6 run to pull away from Bulldogs.
SEATTLE – The Fresno State women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with No. 13 Washington through three quarters at Alaska Airlines Arena on Sunday afternoon, but eventually succumbed to one of the NCAA's top shooting teams, falling 85-54.
Â
Sophomore Candice White led the Bulldogs with 19 points, with 14 coming in the first half, and junior Bego Faz Davalos added 11 points and 13 rebounds for fifth double-double of the season.
Â
Fresno State grabbed the early advantage, ending the opening quarter by connecting on eight of its final nine shots for a nine-point swing. Washington added two free throws to end the quarter but the 'Dogs took 23-19 into the second frame.
Â
The Bulldogs closed the opening 10 minutes shooting 58.8 percent from the field, but the hot start cooled in the ensuing 10 minutes, shooting just 6-of-18 from the field. Washington in turn shot 50 percent and grabbed a 41-37 lead heading into halftime behind a 12-3 run late in the quarter.
Â
The Huskies pushed its lead up to nine early in the third, but the Bulldogs continued to chip away. Midway through the half, Fresno State took advantage of a pair of UW missed shots and turnovers as they put together an 8-0 run with three consecutive layups from Faz Davalos. The spurt pulled the 'Dogs within one at 49-48 with 3:31 to play in the quarter. From that point, the Huskies clamped down and allowed just two free throws during the final minutes as they pushed their lead back up to nine.
Â
Washington continued to extend its lead in the final quarter as Fresno State went cold from field missing on 10 straight field goal attempts until Anais Kirvan hit a jumper with 1:49 remaining, but the game was well in hand for the home team as it led 81-52.
How It happened:Â With 3:31 remaining in the third quarter, Fresno State pulled within one at 49-48 on a layup from Faz Davalos, but that was the last basket that the Bulldogs would score during the next 12-and-half minutes as Washington went on a 32-2 run. The Huskies connected on 13-of-17 from the field during the final 13 minutes and 20 seconds of the game.
