FRESNO, Calif. -Â Scoring a season-high 73 points, the Fresno State women's basketball team returned to its winning ways on Wednesday evening topping Cal State Dominguez Hills 73-60 at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (5-3) had four players in double-figures as sophomore guard Candice White matched her career high with 21 points and added a career-best five steals. Junior center Bego Faz Davalos picked up her third straight double-double and sixth of the season recording 10 points and corralled a career-best 19 rebounds. She also added seven blocks and a season-best five assists.
Freshman guard Kristina Cavey had a season-high 13 points for her second game this season in double digits, while senior forward Anais Kirvan pitched in a career-high 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and added four rebounds and two blocks. The 'Dogs shot a season-best 48.2 percent (27-56) from the field, edging the Toros in rebounds 42-41 and had a season-high 20 assists.
How It happened: The Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-0 lead through the first four minutes of play before CSU Dominguez Hills made its first field goal. After back-to-back layups by Kirvan extended the 'Dogs lead to 18-3, Fresno State was able to maintain a 15-point edge at the end of the first quarter leading 20-5. CSUDH opened the second quarter with a pair of free throws before a 7-0 run by the Bulldogs, getting five points by Cavey, pushing the 'Dogs ahead 27-7. The Toros answered back with a 17-6 run over the ensuing 5:43 to cut the lead to 33-24 before six straight points by the 'Dogs and a 3-pointer by the Toros gave Fresno State a 39-27 halftime lead.
The 'Dogs continued to maintain a double-digit lead throughout the third quarter going on a 14-3 run over a nearly six-minute stretch to extend their lead to 57-36 for their largest lead of the contest. Taking a 59-41 lead into the final quarter, Â the Toros started the fourth quarter on a 10-3 run to cut the lead to 11, but that would be as close as the visitors got as the Bulldogs picked up the 73-60 win.

Jaime White, Fresno State head coach
Opening Statement...
"I thought we started the game off with a bang and we did a good job transitioning. I thought we had solid defense early on. In the second quarter, we struggled a little bit, but overall we played a lot of kids. We wanted to see a lot of our young kids and how they would fit in at certain positions. We turned the ball over a little too much. We just played the land of the giants at Washington and then we came down and played a team of mostly guards, so that was a change for us. It was nice to play everybody. We are going in to finals and you can see it on everybody's faces, but there are no excuses. We have got to play better than we did tonight to beat a good Pacific team on Saturday."
On tonight's turnovers...
"I thought Dominguez Hills did a good job. They were scrappy and they were trapping, and they got their hands on a lot of balls, not just turnovers, but also the rebounding. I would attribute a lot of our turnovers to their speed and their quickness, and having a lot of guards out there. For us, we have to have our eyes up, get open on the wing so we can make those passes, and just have an urgency to take care of the ball. I didn't think that we had that tonight."
On player performance...
"I thought Anais Kirvan had a good game. In fact, she kind of put it on her back for the first half; she had 10 points at halftime. Bego was struggling a little bit, but she did a great job rebounding. Kristina Cavey came in and had a great game as well, it took her a little while to get warmed up, but she did a great job. Also, Kendra Martin had a great game. She had to defend their better kid, who then fouled out. I thought she did a good job at frustrating her which was huge for us. She also went 3-for-3 and hit both of her free throws."
On facing CSU Dominguez Hills…
"I don't really ever worry about who it is we are playing, I just felt like we should have responded a little better from our last game. We played pretty good for about two-and-a-half quarters, and then in the fourth quarter we gave up the ghost at Washington and I feel like we let that lay over a little bit at times in this game. I felt like we should have responded to that and stayed composed, ran our offense well, and made good decisions. We did that at times, just not consistently enough."
Â
On the return of Bulldog all-time leading scorer Jaleesa Ross…
"It was fun to have her back. We are so respectful of what she has done here and what she did, not just as an individual, but also with her teams. It's amazing to have someone go to four NCAA's in all four years. We have the utmost respect for her. I know all of our players know her or know of her. The same with John Bonner, the head coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills, he coached at Fresno Pacific and he is a super guy. We wish them all the best; they are doing a great job with their team. That team is going to win some games and do a great job in their league."
Candice White, sophomore guard
On scoring 21 points tonight…
"I owe a lot of it to my teammates. They were able to get me the ball, and I was able to hit an open shot. It was all from them, they recognize who had the hot hand. Even though we had a lot of turnovers, we were still able to make some good assists throughout the game."
Â
On seeing Jaleesa Ross back at Fresno State…
"Yeah it was awesome. Her picture is in our locker room, so we see her every time we go in and out of the locker room. It is crazy to know the amount of accomplishments that she has accomplished here at Fresno State. It was an honor to play against her team. It motivates me to remember that this is a very good program. The players that have come out of it have been big-time players, including Jaleesa Ross. It is a huge encouragement."
