Felipe joins Fresno State volleyball in fall signing period

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball program announced the signing of Karina Felipe to its 2016 fall signing class on Wednesday. Felipe is set to join the Bulldogs in January 2017 and will make her Bulldog debut as a junior during the 2017-18 academic year.
A 6-0 outside hitter from Casa Branca, Brazil, Felipe comes to Fresno State after spending the last three seasons at a pair of junior colleges. An intended kinesiology major at Fresno State, she spent the past two seasons at Ranger College in Ranger, Tex., after playing the 2014 season at Western Nebraska Community College.
Felipe sat out this past fall at Ranger College helping mentor the Lady Rangers hitters as a student assistant coach. She last played in 2015 earning All-North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference honors where she tallied 234 kills and 184 digs and helped the Rangers contend for a berth in the Region 5 North Conference tournament.
"Karina will transfer to us midyear which is huge for our program, said Bulldog head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "She is a leader and a firecracker. She's mature and plays with a lot of emotion and fire. The game comes easy to Karina and she understands it. She's a true 6-rotation outside hitter and will be a high-impact player right away for us. She's strong and handles the ball really well and has range being able to work blocks and find seams. I think she'll be a big-time playmaker and there is no doubt our crowd will love watching her compete."
A standout performer at Atleta High School in her home country of Brazil, Felipe started her collegiate career at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Neb., as a freshman helping the Cougars go 29-9 and finish fifth at the NJCAA D1 Volleyball Championships.
"I can't express what I'm feeling now," Felipe said to the Rangers athletic website after her signing became official on Tuesday. "I am so happy. It's really a brilliant dream and this means a lot to me. I'm so excited. It has been a long way, but I'm pretty sure being at Fresno State will be my favorite, just like here at Ranger. I'm so thankful for everything that I have in my life right now."
