FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's golf team is gearing back up for competition this spring after taking its winter break. During that hiatus GoBulldogs.com caught up with junior Trevor Clayton to see how he felt about his first semester as a Bulldog and what he's looking forward to when the spring season tees off Feb. 8 at the Farms Collegiate Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
Q: How do you think you played individually season and as a team during the fall?
Clayton: Individually, I felt like I played pretty solid. I was top 20 in all five of the tournaments. It wasn't my best, but I was glad I was able to pull out some solid finishes. Team wise, I thought we could have done a lot better. In the spring our expectations need to be a lot higher for us to make the regionals, and we're all preparing accordingly.
Q: How do you build off of the success you had in fall?
Clayton: It's good to get any kind of success to build on. We'll all be looking back on that throughout the season to see how much better we can be.
Q: Where would you gage your confidence level right now?
Clayton: It's pretty high. I played in one big amateur event over winter break, I didn't play too well but I learned a lot. I worked a lot with my coach over break every day. I'm ready to go.
Q: Is there a particular tournament on the schedule that you're looking forward to the most?
Clayton: The Stanford event. I've played that course a couple of times and it's phenomenal. I can't wait. It's going to be fun!
Q: Do you feel like there's more at stake when you're playing against some of the best players in the country?
Clayton: Not necessarily, I just try to focus on the golf course. Whoever is there doesn't change the golf course. I just focus on my own game.
Q: What part of your game are you trying to improve upon the most?
Clayton: Over winter break I focused on my wedging from 150 yards-and-in. I'm trying to dial in the yardages the best that I can, so I can be sharp going into the spring.
Q: What would you describe as your biggest team strength as a whole?
Clayton: I would say our strength would be our length. We all hit the ball pretty far. That can be a huge advantage.
Q: What are your individual and team goals for this season?
Clayton: Individually, I would like to make the nationals. That would be awesome! For the team my goal is the same. I don't see why we can't do it. We have to play well, but it's doable.
