FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's lacrosse team opened its season with a win for the third time in its last four seasons with a 14-6 victory over the Stetson Hatters on Friday evening at the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
This was the Bulldogs' second-straight home-opening win behind an aggressive offense and a strong defensive performance. Since 2014, Fresno State is 6-0 when scoring in double digits
"When the Red Wave comes out to support us, we always feel so excited," Fresno State head coach Jessica Giglio said. "It was a wonderful night and I really thought that the energy we had coming in to this was great."
Fresno State sophomore Nicole Ortlieb led the 'Dogs with four goals on her birthday, including three goals in a three-minute span, and the Bulldogs' 2015 leading scorer, junior Caroline Dineen-Carlson, added a hat trick of her own.
This was Fresno State's first win over an opponent from the Atlantic Sun Conference in seven tries.
The Bulldogs led the Hatters in shots (30-11), ground balls (34-20) and draw controls (14-8), while Stetson had more turnovers (32-25) and fouls (28-25).
Fresno State started out strong, with Dineen-Carlson and junior Chelsea Hall each scoring in the first five minutes of the game. The Hatters weren't able to find the back of the net until midway through the first half and the Bulldogs led 7-2 at halftime after giving up only five shots.
Redshirt junior Meganne Weissenfels protected the cage for the 'Dogs, recording three saves on nine shots on goal.
