LARAMIE, Wyo. --- Fresno State senior guard Marvelle Harris scored 25 points with a career-high seven 3-pointers and also had seven assists to lead the Bulldogs' men's basketball team to a 79-75 road win over the Wyoming Cowboys on Wednesday evening at Arena-Auditorium.
Fresno State (17-9, 8-5 Mountain West) built an 18-point lead on the road, came through with critical defensive stops down the stretch and made a season-high 15 3-pointers (three shy of tying the school record).
As a team, the Bulldogs converted 68.2 percent (15-for-22) of their 3-point attempts and shot 55.4 percent (22-for-42) from the field.
The Bulldogs won for the fifth time in seven games as junior forward Cullen Russo added 17 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth career double-double. Sophomore guard Jahmel Taylor scored 14 points while going 4-for-4 from beyond the 3-point arc as Fresno State swept the Cowboys for the first time since 1994. Fresno State was the first MW road team to win in the month of February.
"Road wins in conference are really difficult to get," Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry said. "I thought our bench was really positive with our guys on the floor. We had key guys come in and make big plays for us. JT (Jahmel Taylor) made big shots. I thought Cullen (Russo) was much in the second half - both offensively and defensively for us. It's a huge win for us on the road."
Junior guard Jason McManamen set career highs of 28 points and eight 3-pointers for Wyoming (12-15, 5-9 MW). Senior guard Josh Adams added 16 points and eight assists, but the Bulldogs' defense limited Adams - one of the nation's leading scorers - to just two first-half points.
The Cowboys jumped out to an 11-5 lead before Fresno State used 18-4 run to build a 23-15 advantage with 8:50 left in the first half. The Pokes rallied back and took a 33-31 lead with 3:33 to go before halftime.
The Bulldogs closed the first half on an 8-0 run and led 39-33 at the break while holding Wyoming scoreless for the final 3:33 of the opening half.
Fresno State continued to fire away and extended its lead to 57-39 with 12:39 remaining. Wyoming closed to within 68-67 with 1:57 to play before Taylor knocked down his fourth 3-pointer of the game - a deep contested shot - to start the Bulldogs' decisive 8-0 surge that helped seal the win.
Fresno State returns home to host Utah State on Saturday at 3 p.m. PT for Alumni Night, which will feature a post-game scrimmage of former Bulldog players. Tickets start at $15 for Saturday's home game.
