ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 8 Fresno State equestrian team opened a challenging weekend doubleheader with an 8-7 loss to No. 10 Kansas State on Friday at the University of Georgia Equestrian Complex.
The Bulldogs are now 3-7 (3-2 UEC), while Kansas State moved to 4-5 (1-3 Big 12) and now own a 4-1 all-time mark against Fresno State.
Despite falling short by one point, the ‘Dogs topped K-State in two divisions - Horsemanship (3-1) and Equitation on the Flat (2-1) – and tied in Reining (2-2). Fresno State was awarded two Most Outstanding Player awards at the days end - Reining and Equitation on the Flat.
The eighth-ranked Bulldogs were off to a strong start as they tallied a 5-3 Western decision over K-State, however the Wildcats clinched Friday’s close matchup in Hunt Seat (5-2).
Next up, the ‘Dogs will compete in a head-to-head battle with host No. 2 Georgia (8-2, 4-2 SEC) tomorrow at 10 a.m. UGA is coming off a 15-4 triumph over K-State during opening day of the weekend-stretch.
The two teams have previously met this year in Dover, Del., when Georgia defeated the Bulldogs 12-8 during opening weekend. During that event, Fresno State kept the pressure on the then-ranked No. 1 national leader, taking two events – Horsemanship and Reining – while barley missing in Equitation on the Flat (3-2) and pacing UGA by two points heading into the final event.
The ‘Dogs enter Saturday’s meet with a 0-10 record against the second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs.
Fresno State will return home to host Baylor and South Dakota State, March 18-19, for what will be senior weekend at the Student Horse Center. The remaining 2015-16 schedule will round out at the UEC Championships, followed by a shot at the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) title.
