BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Fresno State scored the last three goals, but the Bulldog women's lacrosse team came up short against Campbell at Barker-Lane Stadium on Sunday morning in Buies Creek, N.C., and dropped the game 13-11.
The 'Dogs (2-3, 0-2 MPSF) were led by freshman Sarah Bloise, who netted five goals, an assist, eight draw controls and two ground balls. Sophomore Nicole Ortlieb had another strong performance as she scored four times and now leads the team with 13 goals this season.
"Sarah did an outstanding job on the draw control today as well as finding the back of the net," Fresno State head coach Jessica Giglio said. "Both Meganne [Weissenfels] and Natalie [Chaffin] were very strong for us in the cage today as well. As a team, we really need to focus on the details to finish out games and get more wins."
Bloise began the game with the momentum from Fresno State's 14-10 win over Presbyterian on Friday and scored just 40 seconds in, followed by goals from junior captain Caroline Dineen-Carlson and Ortlieb.
The Camels (1-2, 0-0 Big South) returned fire with four-straight scores from four different players. Bloise and Campbell then traded goals, but the Camels scored twice in the final 40 seconds of the first half to take a 7-5 lead.
The Bulldogs couldn't quite catch up in the second half, despite two more scores from Bloise, three from Ortlieb and one goal from junior Kyleigh Westgarth.
Fresno State sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Chaffin started her first game of the season and played the first 15 minutes, recorded four saves and allowed two goals. Redshirt junior Meganne Weissenfels came in for the rest of the game and notched nine saves.
The 'Dogs won the draw control battle 14-12 and had their best shooting percentage of the season (.500), but committed 24 turnovers, compared to Campbell's 14.
