FRESNO, Calif. - As the Fresno State women's lacrosse team approaches the midway point of its 2016 season, GoBulldogs.com caught up with sophomore attacker Nicole Ortlieb as she continues to set the offensive pace for the Bulldogs.
The Kensington, Md., native has started each game for the Bulldogs since arriving at Fresno State for the 2015 season. Last season, she scored the most goals (21) as a Bulldog freshman and has the most goals per game (1.70), best shooting percentage (.607) and best shots on goal percentage (.723) in program history.
This season, Ortlieb leads the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and ranks 18th in the nation with 13 goals. She has also made other appearances on Fresno State top 10 career lists in points (7th), points per game (2nd), goals (7th), shots per game (5th) and shots on goal per game (4th).
We asked her a variety of questions from her passion for lacrosse to what she misses most about the east coast.
Q: What is your favorite Bulldog moment so far?
Ortlieb: It would have to be last year when we beat Cal with six seconds left in the game at home on senior night.
Q: What is your favorite part about playing lacrosse?
Ortlieb: Lacrosse is the only sport that I had ever played in which I didn't hate going to practice. I enjoyed waking up early and going to tournaments. Lacrosse just fit for me.
Q: How long have you been playing lacrosse?
Ortlieb: I've been playing lacrosse since I was in fourth grade.
Q: What is something that people don't know about Nicole Ortlieb?
Ortlieb: I've been to a lot of different countries. I've traveled to Israel, Greece, Italy, New Zealand and the Dominican Republic.
Q: If you could have a super power, which one would it be?
Ortlieb: I would definitely say invisibility. That would be cool.
Q: Where are your favorite places to eat in Fresno?
Ortlieb: I really like Teriyaki Don and Pieology.
Q: Why did you want to move to the west coast?
Ortlieb: I didn't want to stay home. I wanted to see what else was out there. I went to New Zealand and after that I didn't think that California seemed that far away anymore.
Q: Is there anything that you miss about the east coast?
Ortlieb: I miss having all four seasons. I don't miss shoveling snow.
Q: If you could play a different Division I sport, which one would it be?
Ortlieb: I would swim; it seems like an intense sport!
