SAN JOSE, Calif. --- The Fresno State men's basketball team struggled on both ends of the floor in suffering a 65-53 loss at San Jose State on Wednesday night at The Event Center.
Fresno State (14-8, 5-4 Mountain West) got 12 points from Cezar Guerrero and 11 points from Karachi Edo in the losing effort.
"Our guys have to want it right now," Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry said. "We're at the midway point in the season, and we had put ourselves in a good position. We didn't get the 50/50 balls tonight. They out hustled us and out scrapped us tonight. That's the bottom line."
Spartans' freshman Brandon Clarke had a career-high 15 rebounds and 14 points to record his third double-double in the last seven games.
Frank Rogers led San Jose State (8-15, 3-8 Mountain West) in scoring with 17 points. Isaac Thornton and Cody Schwartz each had 12 points for the Spartans. Schwartz, also a freshman, went 14 for 25 from the floor in his last three games.
Rogers' layup tied the game at 35 with 13:43 remaining, and followed with a free throw, a 3 and a layup to make it 41-37. The Spartans never trailed thereafter.
Fresno State returns to the Save Mart Center for a two-game homestand starting Saturday at 4 p.m. PT against UNLV for a Night in Navy, when the Bulldogs will wear their alternate navy blue uniforms and all fans are encouraged to wear navy blue.
"We're playing a team that's as talented as anyone else in the league, at home," Terry said of UNLV. "We know we have to compete at a very high level."
The Tarkanian Family will also be attending Saturday's game to launch its Tark Toy Drive on Saturday.
The Red Wave and Rebel Nation are asked to donate new stuffed toys, which will be donated to Valley Children's Hospital (Madera, Calif.) and University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, to raise awareness that strokes can happen at any age and give back to children in need of a comfort in the Fresno and Vegas communities.
