Bulldogs drop midweek contest

FULLERTON, Calif.- The No. 23/25 Fresno State softball team made its way north from San Diego to take on Cal State Fullerton for a midweek non-conference contest, prior to returning home from a six-day road stretch. The Bulldogs fell 5-0 the Titans on Tuesday afternoon at the Anderson Family Field.
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs maintain the series record of 41-33 over Cal State Fullerton since the two programs first competed in 1981. The Titans advance to 24-9 on the season meanwhile Fresno State is 18-9-1 prior to opening the regular season on Tuesday, March 29.
Fresno State faced a three-run deficit heading into the second inning as Fullerton captured the lead on a home run prior to suffering their first out. Rookie pitcher Kamalani Dung struck out the initial batter faced after relieving senior starter Jill Compton in the top of the second inning.
Dung tossed five innings, fanned three batters and allowed two hits after Compton gave up the go-ahead run which resulted in being charged her fourth loss of the year.
Fresno State acquired its first hit on an infield single by junior Lindsey Willmon and left a combined total of four runners stranded, three of which were in scoring position. As one of four Bulldog runners to reach third base on Tuesday, junior Malia Rivers was called out at the plate while advancing on a wild pitch in the fourth.
Fullerton added two additional runs on a pair of base hits thorough the infield in the middle of the sixth, leaving the `Dogs trailing by five after six and a half innings of play. Fresno State's four hits were generated by Rivers, Willmon, Alyssa Villalpando and catcher Paige Gumz.
The `Dogs approached their 28th game of the year coming off a 3-2 record at the San Diego Classic II. The Titans have won 11 of their last 12 games including victories over two-of-three nationally ranked teams during a 3-1 performance at the Easton Classic.
In addition to Tuesday's contest, the seventh top 25 national rankings were released as Fresno State made its sixth straight appearance in both major listing. The squad moved up to No. 23 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Rankings and is sited No. 25 in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Softball Coaches Poll.
Cal State Fullerton is 3-3 against nationally ranked teams and began receiving votes to the placed in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 for the first time this week.
The Bulldogs were positioned 20th in the first 2016 RPI top 25 listings heading into the midweek contest. Fresno State is the lone Mountain West program in the top 50, as San Diego State trails at No. 55.

Bulldog softball will enjoy the remainder of spring break away from competition before taking the road to open the regular season with Boise State on Tuesday, March 29. Mountain West play will continue with a three-game home series against San Diego State starting Friday, April 1.
Additional home conference battles include Utah State (April 15-17), Colorado State (April 22-24) and UNLV (May 12-14), with road games against New Mexico (April 8-10), San Jose State (April 29-May 1) and Nevada (May 6-8).
