Bulldogs roll to four straight MW victories

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team took down San Diego State, 9-2 during Friday's Mountain West home-opener at Margie Wright Diamond. "Strike out Cancer" weekend continues on Saturday at 6 p.m., and the 'Dogs will face the Aztecs one last time on Sunday at noon.
"I thought our pitching improved tonight and the defense really stepped up," head coach Trisha Ford said. "Kierra [Willis] had an outstanding assist from left field in the first inning that set the momentum of the game and we executed with timely hitting to get the W."
The No. 25 Bulldogs extended their regular-season win-streak to four and move to 21-9-1 on the season. Fresno State currently tops the league while four contests into this week's six-game stretch. With Friday's win, the team extended a 14-game MW streak dating back to the 2015 season.
Friday's defense was errorless through seven complete innings meanwhile junior Kierra Willis logged the lone outfield assist to rob an Aztec triple in the first inning. Senior Jill Compton went the distance with six strikeouts and earned her 11th victory as the pitcher of record against San Diego State on Friday.
In addition to Willis' defensive effort, she led the team at the plate going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, a double and knocked in two runs on a base hit to give the 'Dogs a 2-0 edge in the middle of the second.
Fellow junior Lindsey Willmon kept her hot streak going from earlier in the week after logging a .750 average (3-for-4) with a double and her ninth home run of the season that added to runs to SDSU's deficit in the sixth.
Willmon previously set a single-game program record and all-time conference-high with nine RBI's in Fresno State's 18-2 win over Boise State on Wednesday. A grand slam, three-run knock and a two-run double topped Bulldog softball's historic record of seven RBI's, accomplished four times by two former Bulldogs.
Additional offensive contributors against the Aztecs were Bulldog catcher Paige Gumz (2-for-4) with two RBI's and junior Malia Rivers who scored a run on a bases-loaded walk. Fresno State's additional two runs were accounted for on wild pitches.
San Diego State was held to just one run through three compete innings before getting on the board in the fourth on a double to left. The Aztecs picked up their second and final run on what was just their second extra base hit of the game in the sixth. SDSU is 21-14 on the season and now owns a 3-4 MW record.
STRIKE OUT CANCER WEEKEND
All active military and veterans get in FREE on Saturday. New kids socks and underwear donations will be taken for the Marjaree Mason Center and pink "K-Out" t-shirts will be given out in game.
Sunday's promotions include FREE admission for fans wearing pink. The t-shirt giveaway will continue along with spotlighting Project Linus, Susan G Komen and Sisterhood of Survivors. Kids are welcome to run the bases postgame.

The three-game series with San Diego State will continue on Saturday, April 2 at Margie Wright Diamond, first pitch is set for 6 p.m. The weekend will wrap-up with a noon start on Sunday, April 3.
Additional home conference battles include Utah State (April 15-17), Colorado State (April 22-24) and UNLV (May 12-14). The `Dogs take the road to compete against New Mexico (April 8-10), San Jose State (April 29-May 1) and Nevada (May 6-8).
