Bulldogs capture series against Aztecs

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 25 Fresno State softball team (23-9-1) remains unbeaten over five Mountain West contests following a 6-3 victory against San Diego State on Saturday night at Margie Wight Diamond. The 'Dogs captured the weekend series and will close out "Strike Out Cancer" weekend with a final game against the Aztecs on Sunday at noon.
Fresno State paces the nine-team conference after capturing wins in seven of their last eight matchups. Meanwhile, San Diego State is 21-14 on the season (3-5 MW) and had fallen one standing to sixth heading into Saturday's action.
The 'Dogs opened the contest on four consecutive hits and score two-runs on a standup double by Kierra Willis before the Aztecs collected their first out of the game. Following a quiet second inning, SDSU gained their first lead of the series on a three-run homer with two away in the top of the third.
Bulldog catcher Paige Gumz scored a run and tied the game on a base hit through the right side in the middle of the fifth before pinch hitter Morgan Howe gave the squad a two-run edge on an extra base hit the next inning.
Of the starting lineup, Bria Kennedy paced the team going 3-for-4 with the 'Dogs final RBI in the bottom of the sixth. Designated player Dominique Jackson additionally logged her sixth multi-hit effort as a freshman with two of Fresno State's five combined doubles on Saturday.
From the circle, freshman Kamalani Dung (4-0) drew the start and tossed five complete inning prior to senior Jill Compton making her 20th appearance of the season in the top of the sixth. The duo combined fanned four batters with a 3.00 ERA and just two batters walked.
Over two games against the Aztecs this week, seven Bulldogs are hitting .400 or better in more than one at-bat including Gumz (3-for-6), Willis (3-for-6), Vanessa Hernandez (2-for-4), Kennedy (3-for-7), Lindsey Willmon (3-for-7), Jackson (2-for-5) and Alyssa Villalpando (2-for-5).
STRIKE OUT CANCER WEEKEND
Sunday's promotions include FREE admission for fans wearing pink. The t-shirt giveaway will continue along with spotlighting Project Linus, Susan G Komen and Sisterhood of Survivors. Kids are welcome to run the bases postgame.
NEXT UP
Following this week's series, Fresno State will visit New Mexico (April 8-10) prior to hosting Utah State, April 15-17 at Margie Wright Diamond. The team will additionally compete at home against Colorado State (April 22-24) and UNLV (May 12-14) and will travel to San Jose State (April 29-May 1) and Nevada (May 6-8).
