Softball sweeps second conference foe

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State softball topped San Diego State 8-5 during Sunday afternoon's series finale at Margie Wright Diamond. The No. 25 Bulldogs are 24-9-1 overall and own a perfect 6-0 Mountain West record.
The `Dogs captured the weekend series after outscoring the Aztecs 9-2 on Friday and 6-3 a day ago. Fresno State paces the nine-team conference after winning 8 of their last 10 contests with an unbeaten MW mark. San Diego State dropped to sixth in the league with a 21-15 overall mark, while 3-6 in regular season action.
San Diego State came out swinging and added two runs on a defensive miscue and sacrifice fly in the first. Junior Kierra Willis got the `Dogs on the board in the middle of the inning before senior infielder Alyssa Villalpando tied it up on a shallow double to right field. Fresno State snapped the Aztecs lead on junior Lindsey Willmon's one-run base hit and headed to the second with a 3-2 edge.
The Bulldog's second inning surge began with senior Bria Kennedy scoring on an Aztec error before Villalpando added three runs on her sixth home run of the season, giving Fresno State a five-run advantage.
The Aztecs loaded the bases on three straight walks in the third and picked up a two runs on one hit, along with scoring a single run in the fifth prior to the Bulldogs collecting their eighth and final run in the middle of sixth.
Overall on Sunday, Villalpando accounted for both of Fresno State's extra base hits with four RBI's and six total bases meanwhile Malia Rivers paced the team going 3-for-4 with a stolen base.
Senior Jill Compton (14-4) earned her second game start of the series and became the pitcher of record for the third straight contest with four batters fanned on Sunday. San Diego State's Alex Formby (9-7) was charged the loss after allowing seven of the `Dogs eight earned runs.
Collectively during "Strike Out Cancer" weekend, Fresno State hit .405 (32-for-79) with eight doubles, two home runs, 20 RBI's, a .582 slugging percentage, 13 walks, three sacrifice hits and six stolen bases with a near perfect (.967) fielding percentage.
ON THE HORIZON
Fresno State will visit New Mexico (April 8-10) prior to hosting Utah State, April 15-17 at Margie Wright Diamond. The team will additionally compete at home against Colorado State (April 22-24) and UNLV (May 12-14) and will travel to San Jose State (April 29-May 1) and Nevada (May 6-8).
