COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Fresno State sophomore Mayar Sherif Ahmed has been named Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Ahmed went 4-0 between singles and doubles play at the No. 1 spots last week as she helped the Bulldogs to wins against No. 53 UNLV and San Diego State. Ahmed notched the clinching point in a 4-3 win over the Rebels as she defeated 82nd-ranked Carol Zi Yang 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. The victory was the sophomore's sixth over a ranked opponent this season. The loss was the first of the year for the Rebels who entered the dual match with a 19-0 record.
Two days later, the native of Cairo, Egypt earned her 25th singles win of the season by topping San Diego State's Jana Buth, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles play, the sophomore teamed up with her sister Rana Sherif Ahmed to produce identical 6-2 scores in pair of wins. The sisters' victory over the 66th-ranked team of Yang and Aiwen Zhu was their fourth over ranked team this year.
With the two of victories to open conference play, the Bulldogs extended their regular-season league win streak to 15 matches, which dates back to the 2012-13 season.
The weekly award for Ahmed is her third of the season and fourth of her career.
