ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Fresno State's NCAA individual qualifier Trevor Clayton shot an opening round 3-over-par 75 on Monday at the Albuquerque Regional, hosted by New Mexico at the UNM Championship Course.
Clayton, the Mountain West Individual Champion, is tied for 35th among the 75 player field. There is a two-way tie for the overall lead at 3-under-par, shared by Jon Rahm of Arizona State and Rigel Fernandes of South Florida.
In what was a fantastic start, firing a birdie on the first hole of the tournament, followed by three pars, was marred by two double bogeys and a bogey during the second half of the front nine. He sat at 4-over 40 at the turn.
Clayton bounced back, carding a 1-under 35 on the back nine to finish the day at 3-over-par (75). He sank birdies on the par 4 No. 10 and No. 15, and wrapped up the day with a birdie on the par 5 No. 18 – there were two bogeys and four pars in-between.
The tournament resumes Tuesday at 7 a.m. PT. Clayton will tee off round two at 9:12 a.m. PT. The regional concludes with the final 18 on Wednesday. Live scoring can be found at Golfstat.com.
