ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- On the second day of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Regional in Albuquerque, Fresno State junior Trevor Clayton moved into the top 20 behind a 5-over-par 77 on Tuesday. He is 8-over-par (152) after 36 holes on the par 72 UNM Championship Course.
Poor conditions cannot be better summed up than an average score of 79.91 by the 75 player field on Tuesday. Winds consistently blew 25 mph and gusted to 35 mph throughout the second round. One individual was able to post a score below par (1-under-par 71), who is also the clubhouse leader -- Jon Rahm of Arizona State (4-under-par 140).
Clayton, despite shooting a score higher than round one (75-77=152), moved up the leaderboard and into a tie for 20th -- after starting the day in a tie for 35th.
For the second round, Clayton started from the No. 10 tee. He carded six pars and three bogeys over the first nine holes to go 3-over-par (39). Once making the turn, Clayton fired a birdie for the second-straight day on the first hole, from there he'd finish the second half of his round 2-over-par (38).
As the postseason format goes, the lowest five team scores and all its individuals advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. After those 25 individuals are removed for the player leaderboard, the lowest individual from the remaining nine teams or six individuals that qualified, will move on.
The tournament resumes Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. PT, the final round of 54 holes. Clayton will tee off round three at 9:04 a.m. PT. Live scoring can be found at Golfstat.com.
