CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Facing its first ACC opponent since 2004, the Fresno State volleyball team swept Boston College on Saturday evening at the Boston College Invitational to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2009. The 'Dogs won the sets 25-21, 26-24, 25-22.
"Boston College was a tough team," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "Being an ACC opponent, they seemed used to grinding through a match. I am proud of our student-athletes for keeping the pressure on. We would fall back, then come back with force. We played poised and the butterflies were gone."
For the second consecutive game, Fresno State (2-0) had four players with double figure kills as junior Lauren Torres led the team with 12 kills and hit .421. Senior Aleisha Coates added 11 kills, including seven in the first set, and sophomore Brielle Hefner tacked on 11 kills. Junior Carly Scarbrough added 10 kills and senior Maggie Eppright picked up 22 digs.
After falling behind 15-12 in set one, the 'Dogs were forced to call a timeout, but were able to regroup to score 13 of the final 19 points in the set. Scoring five of the final six points to seal the win, Coates had seven of the Bulldogs 18 kills and Hefner added four in the set as the 'Dogs hit .308.
"We came out in set one firing and we swung hard and just kept digging balls," added Netherby-Sewell. "Our libero and defensive specialist's stepped it up and they passed well and dug balls."
The second set saw both teams play very even after a kill from Hefner tied the set at 16 before Boston College (2-1) took a three-point lead at 22-19 before the 'Dogs scored the next three points to tie the match at 22. After the match was tied at 23, and again at 24, a service error by BC and a kill by redshirt freshman Madelyn Halteman gave the 'Dogs a 26-24 victory.
Falling behind 13-11 in set three, the 'Dogs battled back to take a 19-16 lead before the Eagles scored three to tie the set at 19. After a kill by Hefner & block assists by Torres and Scarbrough put the Bulldogs ahead 21-19, the Eagles tied the game at 22 before the 'Dogs took home the win with the final three points to complete the sweep.
"I really liked the play of Jacqueline Hutcheson and Maggie Eppright tonight," said Netherby-Sewell. "Those two swarmed Boston College's offense and the victory was a total team effort."
Fresno State looks to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2002 on Sunday as the 'Dogs travel to Hartford (0-3) to face the Hawks at 1:00 p.m. PT.
