FRESNO, Calif. -Â Behind 14 kills by senior outside hitter Aleisha Coates, the Fresno State volleyball team swept Fresno Pacific in an exhibition match on Monday evening at the Save Mart Center. The 'Dogs won the individual sets 25-19, 25-21, 25-17.
"I think offensively we are a very strong and teams will have to defend across the net and will not be able to key on certain players," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell after the 'Dogs victory.
"Heading into the UC Irvine match on Thursday, we are going to have to play way more disciplined on the block," added Netherby-Sewell. "As we move forward in Mountain West play, we have to be able to shut teams down and we need to do that consistently and continue to stay disciplined."
Defeating Fresno Pacific for the fourth straight meeting, the 'Dogs were led by Coates who finished with a team-high 14 kills and added eight digs, two service aces and a pair of assists. Sophomore outside hitter Brielle Hefner added 10 kills and redshirt freshman Madelyn Halteman added 39 assists. The 'Dogs outhit the Sunbirds .327 to .262 and edged FPU in kills 48-33.Â
The 'Dogs made quick work of the Sunbirds in the first set, but FPU hung tough in the second set taking a 16-11 lead before the 'Dogs stormed back on a 7-2 run to tie the match at 18. Four kills by Hefner and two more by Carly Scarbrough proved to be the difference as the 'Dogs claimed set two 25-21. The Bulldogs then jumped on Fresno Pacific quickly in the third set taking a 16-10 lead after a kill by Scarbrough and was able to finish out the sweep with back-to-back kills by Halteman and Scarbrough.Â
Fresno State returns to action on Thursday when the 'Dogs host their final non-conference match of the season welcoming UC Irvine (3-7) to the Save Mart Center at 6 p.m.
