The Field

• Six of the 15 teams that will visit the Nick Watney Invitational are programs that rank in the Golfstat top 100 (last poll released June 2, 2016). Those teams are returning champion Saint Mary's, Cal Poly, Long Beach State, Sacramento State, UC Santa Barbara, and host Fresno State.
The Tournament
• The event will span two days and feature 54 holes of stroke play. A shotgun start format will be used for rounds one and two, both held on Monday. All players will be re-grouped before the final round on Tuesday, based on scores, and tee off every 10 minutes from holes No. 1 and No. 10. For the purposes of tournament honors and awards, ties will be split per NCAA Championship tie-breaking procedures.
• Saint Mary's won the second annual Nick Watney Invitational on Oct. 5-6, 2015, edging out second place Fresno State. The Gales bested a field of 13 with a 27-under-par 825 while their own Pavan Sadoo set a Fresno State individual tournament record with a 16-under-par 197 to be the medalist. The 'Dogs shot a 19-under-par 833 for second place and Cal trailed in third place at 17-under-par (835).
• The Fresno State Classic, formerly called the 'Fresno State Lexus Classic', was renamed 'The Nick Watney Invitational' prior to the September 2014 edition after former Fresno State standout and PGA golfer Nick Watney. Watney played at Fresno State from 2000-2003, and was a three-time All-American. Watney was the WAC Freshman of the Year in 2000 and the WAC Player of the Year three consecutive seasons, 2001-03.
• Fresno State has captured its home-hosted tournament crown six times ('73, '84, '90, '94, '01, '02), with its last wins coming when Nick Watney led the team both seasons. Watney was the individual champion of the Classic both in 2001 and 2002. At the 2001 event, Watney fired a Fresno State Classic record 63 during the second round, aiding the 'Dogs to a 40-shot win over the second place finisher Stanford.
• BYU, 2016 participant, owns the most tournament wins as a visiting contender at a Fresno State hosted men's golf tournament - sporting 12 in its all-time history.
• The Nick Watney Invitational has been on the move around Fresno since the inaugural event was at Sunnyside Country Club. Year two was at Fort Washington Country Club and the 2016 edition will be at San Joaquin Country Club.
The Course
• San Joaquin Country Club will play at par 71, 6,952 yards for the Nick Watney Invitational.
• San Joaquin Country Club (located on the west side of Fresno, Calif.) sits on the banks of the San Joaquin River and is known for its fair, but tough test of the game of golf. The last Fresno State hosted tournament was March 2014, the final year before the tournament was renamed the Nick Watney Invitational.
