No. 9 Fresno State rides past No. 10 Aggies 7-6

The Fresno State equestrian team continues play against South Dakota State Friday afternoon and Saturday morning and concludes the Willis Invitational against Baylor at 10 a.m. PT on Saturday
WACO, Texas.- The No. 9 Fresno State equestrian team defeated No. 10 New Mexico State 7-6 on the opening day of the Willis Invitational on Friday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center in Waco, Texas.
"We had some really good rides today, but made a few mistakes," Fresno State head coach Eric Hubbard said. "We were able to get out some of those season-opener nerves and come out with a win. We cannot take anything for granted and need to put in strong rides. We cannot make the same mistakes and must ride mentally tough. We are looking forward to some great rides from everyone."

The Bulldogs (1-0) will take the reins again on Saturday to complete their competition against South Dakota State (0-1) at 8 a.m. PT and No. 5 Baylor (1-1) at 10 a.m. Live scoring will be available HERE for Fresno State's meet against Baylor.

The 'Dogs opened action on Friday with Equitation Over Fences, where the Aggies gained a 3-1 lead, while junior Kylina Chalack earned the Bulldogs' lone point, scoring an 80 over New Mexico State's 76.

Next, senior Taylor Brown helped Fresno State to its only point in Reining with a score of 68.5 over the Aggies' 64, giving New Mexico State a 5-2 lead overall.

As Fresno State moved on to Equitation on the Flat, the Bulldogs were able to shut out the Aggies 3-0 with points from Chalack (79-76), freshman Natalie Wendt (77-59) and junior Sierra Swaffar (72-69), tying the meet at five points each.

In the competition's final event, Horsemanship, strong rides from Brown (73-71.5) and junior Rachel Williams (72-66.5) were enough to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage in the event and an overall victory.

This is the second-straight win for Fresno State over New Mexico State after defeating the Aggies last October (12-8).
Two 'Dogs claimed Most Outstanding Player accolades – Chalack (Equitation on the Flat) and Brown (Reining and Horsemanship).

On Friday, Baylor defeated South Dakota State 14-2. The Bulldogs opened competition against South Dakota State on Friday and will return to action tomorrow at 8 a.m., followed by their meet against Baylor at 10 a.m.
