Bulldogs head to Lone Star State for UIW Cardinal Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - After hosting the Bulldog Showdown over the weekend, the Fresno State volleyball team is back in action on Friday and Saturday traveling to Texas to participate in the Incarnate Word Cardinal Classic.

Looking to match its best start since 2002 and stay unbeaten in a primetime showdown with Big East foe DePaul, the Bulldogs came up short falling 3-1 to suffer its first loss of the season. The Bulldogs were able to even up the match at a set apiece with a 25-16 win in set two, but DePaul bounced back to take set three and four to pick up the win. Coates had her sixth straight double digit kill performance with 14 to go along with five digs. Brielle Hefner added 11 kills and Aubrey Folk posted 10 kills.
Wrapping up the weekend with a match against Portland on Saturday, the 'Dogs suffered their first sweep of the season as the Pilots took down the Bulldogs 25-14, 25-17, 25-20. Hefner led the way with seven kills, Coates added six and Haile Watson and Carly Scarbrough each finished with five apiece. Senior Maggie Eppright was named to the All-Tournament team after totaling 38 digs and five service aces in the 'Dogs three games.
Home Openers Under Netherby-Sewell
The Bulldogs improved to 5-4 in home openers under Netherby-Sewell with its five-set win over Portland State. It was the 'Dogs first win at the Save Mart Center to start their home slate since 2013.Â
A look at the Bulldog opponents at the UIW Cardinal Classic
Fresno State will open the UIW Cardinal Classic with a Friday afternoon match against Texas Southern. A member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), this will be the 'Dogs and Tigers first meeting in program history.
After posting a 16-19 overall mark in 2015, Texas Southern is off to a 2-5 start this season taking down North Carolina A&T in straight sets and topping Lamar in five sets this past weekend at the Houston Cougar Classic. Leading the charge for TSU is senior middle blocker Kali Fluke who leads the team with 74 kills. Asia Howard has a team-best 73 assists while Allison Woods has posted 91 digs. Senior middle blocker Ashlynn Caldwell has a team-best 22.0 blocks (two solo, 20 assisted).
The 'Dogs will get Saturday started with a morning match with Prairie View A&M. Another first-time opponent for Fresno State, the Panthers come into this weekend 0-4 after falling in straight sets to Houston Baptist on Tuesday evening. Also members of the SWAC, Prairie View A&M is coming off a 9-25 season in 2015 season posting a 4-4 mark in the conference.
The Panthers are led by Larissa Martinez who has 26 kills and a team-high 93 attacks. Erica Jimenez has 56 assists, while Christen Augustine leads the club with 40 digs.Â
The Bulldogs wrap up the UIW Cardinal Classic with a Saturday night match with host Incarnate Word. The host Cardinals, members of the Southland Conference, are off to 2-5 start to 2016 after splitting four games last weekend at the Central Arkansas Invitational downing UCA in four sets and sweeping Alcorn State in straight sets.
Incarnate Word is coming off a 8-17 campaign in 2015 finishing with a 6-10 mark in the Southland Conference. The Cardinals are led in kills by sophomore outside hitter Autumn Lockley with 79 and is hitting .221 in 235 total attacks. Madison Williams has 163 assists, while Shaina Garza leads the team with 76 digs and Sarea Alexander has totaled 24 blocks.
'Dogs return to the Lone Star State for the first time since 2014
Fresno State returns to the Lone Star State for the first time since 2014 when the 'Dogs opened the season at the Adidas Rice Invitational. It will only be the 'Dogs third trip to Texas under Netherby-Sewell after trips in 2012 and 2014 where they totaled a 3-3 mark topping UTEP, Idaho State and UC Davis. The 'Dogs three opponents, all hailing from Texas, will only be the fourth, fifth and sixth opponents from Texas that Netherby-Sewell has faced since being at Fresno State. She is 2-2 with wins over Rice and UTEP and losses to Rice and Baylor. Fresno State has faced 12 programs from Texas in its history with the most often played opponent being UTEP as the 'Dogs have faced the Miners 20 times.
Eppright earns Bulldog Showdown All-Tournament honors
A year after setting the single-season program record for digs and earning All-Mountain West honors, senior libero Maggie Eppright has started her final year as a Bulldog in strong fashion as she ranks sixth in the Mountain West in digs with 93 and is ninth in digs per set (3.58). She earned All-Tournament honors at the Bulldog Showdown after finishing the three matched with 38 digs and had only had one reception error in 50 attempts.

With 93 digs through her first seven matches of 2016, Eppright now has 1,465 in her career and sits only 106 shy of moving into the top 10 all-time in the Mountain West in digs. She currently sits third in program history and is only six digs shy of moving past Diana Nalbandian for second place on the all-time list. Tricia Tuley (1993-96) hold the program record with 1,864.

After two weeks of play, the 'Dogs find themselves with a number of players in the top 10 in the Mountain West in a number of statistical categories. Aleisha Coates is tied for fifth in kills (88) and is eighth in kills per set (3.38). Maddie Halteman is second in assists (246) and is seventh in average assists per set (9.46)

The Bulldogs currently lead the Mountain West in service aces (48) and are third in assists (295) and kills (324). Nationally, the 'Dogs rank in the top 100 in the nation in team services aces (22nd), aces per set (28th), kills (84th) and team blocks (91st).
'Dogs home for a pair of matches next week
The Bulldogs return from Texas for a pair of home matches next week at the Save Mart Center. The 'Dogs will take on crosstown opponent Fresno Pacific on Monday at 7 p.m. for High School Night as all high school students get into the game free with an ID. The 'Dogs wrap up nonconference play on Thursday with a match with UC Irvine at 6 p.m. It will be Staff and Faculty Appreciation Day as all Fresno State staff and faculty get in free with an ID. In addition, it is concert ticket giveaway as tickets to the Garth Brooks concert will be raffled pregame as well as during the game.

'Dogs top Portland State; fall to DePaul & Portland at the Bulldog Showdown
Fresno State extended its perfect 4-0 start to the season and continued its best start since 2002 winning its Bulldog Shown opener on Friday defeating Portland State in five sets. The 'Dogs were led by the powerful attack of senior outside hitter Aleisha Coates who had 16 kills and 38 attacks to go along with three digs and three block assists.
