1/11/2017 9:08:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FRESNO, Calif. - Holding a slim six-point halftime lead, the Fresno State women's basketball team held Air Force to 16 second-half points on Wednesday evening as the Bulldogs breezed past the Falcons 63-40 at the Save Mart Center on Salute to Services Night.
Fresno State (10-6, 2-2 MW) was led by the performance of junior center Bego Faz Davalos who recorded her 11th double-double of the season posting 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field and grabbed 14 rebounds. Freshman guard Kristina Cavey added nine points off the bench as the 'Dogs outscored the Falcons 17-4.
Air Force (2-12, 0-4 MW) had a pair of players in double figures as guard Kailin Davis led the way with 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Mariah Forde added 11 points, three steals and two rebounds.
How It happened: After Air Force scored the first field goal of the game, its only lead of the evening, senior guard Kendra Martin nailed a 3-pointer to jumpstart a 9-0 run as the 'Dogs took a 20-8 lead into the second quarter after seven first-quarter points from White. The Falcons cut the deficit to six heading into halftime after outscoring the 'Dogs 16-10 in the second quarter.
Bego Faz Davalos – 14 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals
Recorded her 11th double-double this season and 27th of her career...it is the eighth time she has led the 'Dogs in scoring this season and she has now reached double figures in scoring in 13 games this season…notched her 11th game this season with double-figure rebounds.
Candice White - 14 points, 5 assists, 3 steals
Notched her 12th double-digit scoring performance of the season...set new career high with five assists...fifth game this season with at least three steals.
Quotable:
Jaime White, Fresno State head coach
On tonight's performance against Air Force....
"We had a great start tonight. I thought we did a great job in the first quarter. We ran our plays, knocked down our shots, and got a little bit of a lead. Air Force is a gritty team and they are tough defensively. To get 43 rebounds again is huge for us, but 40-plus is our goal for every game now. In the third quarter, we just needed to answer. It was 45-35 for a while and we just needed to get a couple of buckets back-to-back. Kristina Cavey came up with a big three and then Candice White hit a big three right after. I think that was the dagger and I thought we played solid the rest of the way out."
On winning back-to-back home games before traveling to Boise State on Saturday....
"It was nice to have back-to-back home games. We always talk about not dropping the games that could put you back when making the standings for the tournament. We felt like this was one of the games where we just had to come out and play hard and be able to adapt so I felt good about that. We didn't run the offense the way that I would have wanted to, but that's not a bad thing. It was nice to be able to just play and make plays and just go one-on-one at times."
On facing Boise State on Saturday...
"Hopefully we can take the intensity level that we played with tonight and bring it from the beginning again on Saturday. We have played solid games there, so we look forward to playing there in the Taco Bell Arena. They are a good team and they have come out and done a good job early in the season. In this conference, I think anybody can win any game, including Air Force. You have to make sure that you are ready for everybody."
Junior center Bego Faz Davalos
On making a comeback tonight against Air Force…
"Like you said, it takes time but I am happy and it is working. In order to play the way I do, I need my teammates. When they score and do well, I get more confident about it too. I get excited about it and go off of that. I am confident that my teammates are going to score and I am confident that I am going to score, I just need to be patient about it and it is going to work."
Sophomore guard Candice White
On feeling comfortable on the court…
"It is getting easier game by game. When Coach White talks about shooting, she says don't hesitate, and I did not hesitate."
On getting off to a good start tonight…
"I would have to say it was because of our intensity. I think we realized that if we work hard, good things will happen. That is something that Coach White always preaches. I think we are starting to buy in to that process and that saying."
