Fresno lost its second straight game in Boise, and only the second game overall in the last 15 contests in the series.
BOISE, Idaho – Boise State's Shalen Shaw made one free throw with three seconds remaining as the Broncos held off Fresno State, 67-66, on Saturday at the Taco Bell Arena. Candice White, who led the Bulldogs with 13 points, had one final attempt for the 'Dogs, but her contested 3-pointer was just off the mark.
White was joined in double figures by Emilie Volk (12) and Kristina Cavey (11). Bego Faz Davalos recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
The Bulldogs opened the game up with an early 6-2 lead but Boise State responded with 13-0 run to grab its largest lead of the half at 15-6. Cavey ended the drought with her first of three 3-pointers on the day. Braydey Hodgins, though, scored five points during the final minute of the first as the Broncos end the first quarter with a nine-point lead.
The Bulldogs were able to cut the deficit to six heading into the half and continued to chip away as the contest moved into the third quarter. The 'Dogs came out of the break on an 8-2 run in the opening three minutes. A triple from White brought Fresno State level at 35-35 with 7:24 on the clock. Boise State then built its lead back up to eight with under a minute remaining in the third, but consecutive 3s from White and Kendra Martin made it a seven-point game heading into the final 10 minutes.
Trailing by six with eight minutes to play, Fresno State's outside shooting (8-of-20) got it back into the game. A layup by Martin was followed by 3's from Tory Jacobs and Cavey to spark an 8-2 run to tie the game.
How It Happened: Out of the final media timeout, with the game tied at 61-61, Boise State struck with a 5-0 spurt to force a Fresno State timeout. The 'Dogs regrouped and Cavey drained a corner 3 that was followed by a lay-in from Faz Davalos. With the clock winding down and the game tied at 66-66, Bronco Shaw was fouled. The junior made the second of a pair to give Boise State the lead. White had one last attempt for the 'Dogs, but sophomore's shot caromed off the backboard and rimmed out.
