The Fresno State women's basketball team was unable to withstand a second half run by Colorado State falling 73-56 to the Rams on Wednesday evening at Moby Arena.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Despite taking a four-point lead more than four minutes into the second half, the Fresno State women's basketball team was unable to withstand a second half run by Colorado State falling 73-56 to the Rams on Wednesday evening at Moby Arena.
Fresno State (10-8, 3-4 MW) was led by the first career double-double from sophomore guard Candice White. The Modesto native scored a team-high 19 points going 7-of-19 from the floor and hit a pair of 3-pointers while grabbing a career-best 12 rebounds in 40 minutes of action. Junior center Bego Faz Davalos recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore guard Tory Jacobs made it three 'Dogs in double figures with 10 points to go along with four assists.
Colorado State (13-5, 5-1 MW) had four Rams finish in double figures as senior guard Ellen Nystrom led the way with 20 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field. The 2015-16 Mountain West Player of the Year added six rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks. Senior forward Elin Gustavsson pitched in 17 points while Amanda Kantzy and Hannah Tvrdy added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
How It Happened: With the 'Dogs leading 42-40 with 4:16 remaining in the third quarter, Fresno State saw its lead quickly disappear through a 19-4 run by Colorado State as the Rams took a 59-46 lead with 6:48 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs were held to 2-of-10 shooting from the field in that run and had a pair of turnovers while CSU countered by shooting 6-of-9, including four 3-pointers by Kantzy, who contributed 14 of the Rams' 19 points in that run.
The game opened with each team running off a 7-0 spurt. CSU answered with six straight points before Jacobs let a 3-pointer fly to pull the 'Dogs within two with 2:55 on the clock, but that was their last bucket of the first quarter as the 'Dogs missed their final six shots while the Rams knocked down their four of their final five to take a 23-11 advantage after the first quarter.
Fresno State answered back by starting the second quarter on an 8-0 which started with a 3-pointer from senior guard Emilie Volk. Six straight points from CSU pushed the Rams' lead back to 10, but the Bulldogs pulled back within five heading into the break as Colorado State led 32-27.
Trailing at halftime for the eighth time in the last night games, the 'Dogs started the second half strong behind six points from White. The 'Dogs ran off a 13-4 stretch to take a 40-36 lead with 5:52 remaining in the third quarter and after continuing to lead by a pair, the Rams put the game out of reach for the 'Dogs with a 19-4 run over the ensuing seven minutes as CSU outscored the Bulldogs 33-14 during the final fourteen minutes of the game.
