'Dogs outlast Jackrabbits, 12-7

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The No. 8 Fresno State equestrian team defeated No.10 South Dakota State, 12-7, in its first road meet of the season.

"Today was full of ups and downs," said head coach Eric Hubbard. "We started out great in fences, they really came out strong and set the pace for us. We hit a few bumps in the horsemanship event, but the reiners bounced back and brought the energy back to our side. The flat riders really sealed the deal for us today. Our three MOPs were well deserved."

Senior hunt seat rider Paige Pastorino (equitation over fences) and junior western riders Kara Gustafson (reining) and Taeya Harle (horsemanship) each earned an MOP in their events today.

The Bulldogs saw an early lead in the equitation over fences event, owning a 4-1 advantage over the Jackrabbits. Natalie Wendt, Dani Schneider, Alexandra Dirickson and Pastorino took charge for the 'Dogs in the arena.

South Dakota State gained momentum in the horsemanship event, outscoring Fresno State 3-1. Harle recorded the solo point for the 'Dogs, outscoring SDSU's Whitney Vesey 73.5-71.5 for her third horsemanship victory this season.

Fresno State held on to a 5-4 lead at the afternoon intermission.

In the reining arena, the Bulldogs bounced back and outscored the Jacks 3-2. Taylor Dixon, Paige Barton and Gustafson tallied the three Bulldog points. With a 70-69.5 victory over SDSU's Miranda Sullivan, Barton remains undefeated in the reining event through the four meets this season.

Fresno State had an 8-6 advantage going into the final event of the day.

The Bulldogs sealed the win with a 4-1 victory in the equitation on the flat arena. Brooke Nelson, Schneider, Wendt and Dirickson charted the four points for Fresno State.

The 'Dogs return to action on Thurs., Nov. 9 as they face No.9 UT-Martin in Martin, Tenn. at the Skyhawk Invitational. Fresno State will face No.5 SMU on Fri., Nov. 10 for the second day of the Skyhawk Invitational. The first ride is set to start at 8:00 a.m. PT for both days.
