Sedillo wins platform, ‘Dogs place third at Trojan Diving Invitational

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Sophomore Serena Sedillo won the platform competition and also had a fifth-place finish on 1-meter to lead the Bulldogs at the Trojan Diving Invitational Friday-Sunday in Los Angeles.
As a team the Bulldogs placed third among eight schools, finishing behind only host USC and UCLA. Sedillo, Irina Nikolaeva, and Kelli Funk combined to score 92.0 points, placing ahead of divers from San Diego State, UNLV, Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield, and UC San Diego.
Platform (Sunday)
• Sedillo had the highest score among the 17 competitors in the preliminary round, posting a 5 dive score of 251.25. That number was 3.50 better than USC's Carly Souza, who was second. Funk was in fourth place after the opening round after scoring 227.30. Nikolaeva did not compete on platform.
• In the final round, Sedillo added 246.85 and ended up finishing 11.45 points ahead of Souza for the top spot with a total of 498.10. Funk improved on her first round score with a 245.95 in the final but remained in fourth place, finishing just .25 behind the third place finisher from UCLA at 473.25.
• With their 5 dive scores both Sedillo and Funk qualified for NCAA Zones on the board. Their 10 dive scores were also both career highs.
1-Meter (Saturday)
• Nikolaeva and Sedillo were fourth and fifth, respectively, amongst 24 divers in the preliminary round on 1-meter. Nikolaeva scored 243.20 and Sedillo was just behind at 239.25 through six dives. Funk tied for 19th in the prelims, missing the cut for the final by just one spot.
• Nikloaeva remained in fourth place in the final, finishing at 490.50 after a 247.30 in the final round. Sedillo ended with a total of 480.85 over the two rounds to place sixth overall.
3-Meter (Friday)
• All three Bulldog divers advanced to the final in the 3-meter competition on Friday. Nikolaeva was fourth in the prelims, scoring 263.30, and Sedillo was sixth at 261.80. Funk tallied a 238.45, the 13th best score in the first round to advance to the final.
• Sedillo scored big with a 277.35 in the final round to finish in fifth place with a 539.15 total. Nikolaeva ended with a 503.70 to place eighth and Funk finished 13th totaling 466.35.
What's Next
• The Bulldog divers will next compete in Fresno State's home dual against CSU Bakersfield on Dec. 9. The team's swimmers will be in action this coming Friday-Sunday at the TYR Invitational hosted by Northwestern.
