Fresno State will compete in the 2018 Wooden Legacy in Southern California. The tournament field also features Hawai’i, LaSalle, Miami, Northwestern, Seton Hall, Utah and one school to be named later.
FULLERTON, Calif. --- The Fresno State men's basketball team will compete in the prestigious 2018 Wooden Legacy, which will take place in Southern California next November 22, 23 and 25, ESPN Events announced on Thursday afternoon.
The annual Thanksgiving tournament includes some of the best programs in the country.
With one school still to be named, Fresno State joins Hawai'i (Big West), LaSalle (Atlantic 10), Miami (Atlantic Coast), Northwestern (Big Ten), Seton Hall (Big East) and Utah (Pac-12) in the field. Except for Miami, the other six schools, including Fresno State, will be playing in their first Wooden Legacy event.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for our program and University to be selected to participate in the 2018 Wooden Legacy," Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry said. "This is a tournament that our fans can travel to over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend next year as we play against some great teams. The competition against the high-quality opponents in this field will help prepare us to compete in conference play."
The Wooden Legacy was formed in June 2013 when the John R. Wooden Classic was merged with the Anaheim Classic, which was an eight-school bracketed event played for six years (2007-2012) at the Anaheim Convention Center. The Wooden Classic was staged for 19 years (1994-2012) at the Honda Center with the first 17 events being college doubleheaders.
The Wooden Legacy is one of several in-season eight-school bracketed college basketball tournaments owned and operated by ESPN Events, a subsidiary of ESPN, that have been staged since 2006.
While Fresno State will be competing in its first-ever men's basketball tournament operated by ESPN Events, Hawai'i (10), Miami (nine), Seton Hall (fifth), Utah (fourth), LaSalle (second) and Northwestern (second) all have previous experience in the ESPN Events' in-season tournaments.
Miami, who won its last two games in the 2013 Wooden Legacy after losing in their opening contest in overtime, Northwestern and Seton Hall competed in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, while Fresno State and Utah were NIT participants last March.
The games will played in Fullerton, Calif., inside Titan Gym on campus at CSU Fullerton. The bracket and ticket information for the 2018 Wooden Legacy will be released at a later date. All games are expected to be broadcast on one of ESPN's Family of Networks, and 940 AM ESPN Radio.
