Fresno State set to compete in Collegiate Cup this weekend

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State water polo is one of 16 teams participating in the Collegiate Cup Preseason Tournament this weekend in Fresno. The tournament is hosted by USA Water Polo and will be played at four sites across the city: Fresno State, Clovis West High School, Clovis East High School and Bullard High School. The weekend kicks off with an exhibition game at Fresno State Aquatics Center tonight at 7:30 p.m. featuring the USA Youth National Team versus China's National Team.
The Collegiate Cup is not your typical preseason tournament as the field is stacked with elite teams from across the nation. Stanford, UCLA, Southern California and Cal, the top four collegiate squads from a year ago, will all be competing in the tournament. Other notable college teams that will be coming to The Valley this weekend include UC Irvine, Michigan, Pacific and Hawai'i.
With about six weeks of official training and a few intrasquad scrimmages under their belts, the 'Dogs are ready to get in the pool and face off against real opponents.
"It's a nice opportunity for us to play against other teams," head coach Natalie Benson said. "We can work with lineups, see what everybody is able to do and play with the depth at different positions. It's a great preseason opportunity for us to see what we have moving forward into our season."
The 'Dogs will play five games over the weekend. Fresno State's first game will be at Clovis West High School on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. as the Bulldogs clash with USA Team 2. They will then play the loser of China versus San Jose State at 2 p.m. at Clovis East High School.
Depending on the result, Fresno State will play its third Saturday game at either 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. at Clovis East High School. On Sunday, times and opponents are TBD but both games will be played at Clovis West High School.
The schedule and results will be updated throughout the weekend.
