Bulldogs top Cal State East Bay, narrowly edged by UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – In a double-dual in Davis the Bulldogs had a commanding win over Cal State East Bay and nearly beat UC Davis as well, falling on the last event of the meet.
Fresno State had a 210-67 win over Cal State East Bay and lost by just five points, 144-139, against host UC Davis. The Bulldogs won six swimming events – two each from Zofia Niemczak, Emily Niles, and Manuela Mendolicchio - and had the top-two finishers on both 1-meter and 3-meter diving, with Serena Sedillo and Irina Nikolaeva earning wins.
Swimming Highlights
•   Niemczak picked up her first win of the day in the 100 Butterfly, touching first in 57.11 seconds with teammate Kimberly Harbert just behind in second place at 57.40. The pair also came in first and second in the 200 Fly, with Niemczak at 2:04.31 and Harbert in 2:05.88.
•   Mendolicchio had the 'Dogs first win of the day, taking the 100 Breaststroke in 1:04.84. She followed by winning the 200 Breast by more than three seconds with a winning time of 2:17.88. Mendolicchio also place sixth in the 200 Individual Medley with Lucy Davies posting the team's top finish in third place.
•   Niles dominated both distance events, first winning the 1000 Freestyle by nearly seven seconds in 10:29.32. In the 500 Free she touched first in 5:08.17. Vanessa Dugan placed third in the 1000 Free and Emma Monnich took fifth in the 500 Free.
•   Ugne Mazutaityte posted a pair of second place finishes in both the 100 and 200 Backstroke, coming in just behind of Solie Laughlin of UC Davis in both races. Emily Cutler also scored big points in the backstroke events placing third in the 100 and fourth in the 200.Â
•   Osianna McReed narrowly missed a win in the 50 Freestyle, placing second by just .06. She was also the top Fresno State finisher in the 100 Free, placing fifth in 53.23.Â
•   The meet concluded with the only relay event, the 800 Free Relay. The 'Dogs held a slim lead over the Aggies going into the race but the UC Davis A team finished just ahead of the Bulldog A team and the Aggies had the third-place finisher as well to earn enough points to overtake the lead.
Diving Highlights
•   The Bulldogs had the top three finishers on 3-meter and the top two on 1-meter. The diving competition was just between Fresno State and UC Davis.
•   The 'Dogs three competing divers swept the top spots in the first competition on 3-meter. Sedillo won big with a career-best 321.45, topping her previous career-high score of 304.20. Nikolaeva placed second at 266.55 and Kelli Funk took third at 252.07
•   On 1-meter, Nikloaeva picked up the win with a career-best and NCAA Zone qualifying score of 290.62. Sedillo was second, scoring 256.24, and Funk placed fourth at 235.20.
What's Next
•   The Bulldogs are right back in action on Saturday hosting Fresno Pacific at noon. The FPU men will also be racing UC Santa Cruz concurrently with the women's races.Â
