Bulldogs win 15 of 16 events in dominant victory over CSU Bakersfield

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State had the top finisher in 13 of 14 swimming events and in both diving competitions in a dominant 194-99 victory over valley rival CSU Bakersfield on Saturday at the Aquatics Center.

The Bulldogs defeated the Roadrunners for the third consecutive season while improving to 3-2 overall this year in dual meets. Eight different Bulldog swimmers won races while three swimmers as well as diver Serena Sedillo each won two events. Fresno State held a 194-68 lead entering the last two events of the meet and swam as exhibition in both.

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State had the top finisher in 13 of 14 swimming events and in both diving competitions in a dominant 194-99 victory over valley rival CSU Bakersfield on Saturday at the Aquatics Center.

The Bulldogs defeated the Roadrunners for the third consecutive season while improving to 3-2 overall this year in dual meets. Eight different Bulldog swimmers won races while three swimmers as well as diver Serena Sedillo each won two events. Fresno State held a 194-68 lead entering the last two events of the meet and swam as exhibition in both.

Swimming Highlights
- Emily Niles, Emily Cutler, and Manuela Mendolicchio each claimed two individual event victories. Niles won the first individual event of the meet, the 1000 Freestyle, with a season best time of 10:27.12. She also touched first in the 500 Free in 5:11.41 while Vanessa Dugan placed third in both distance races.
- Cutler won all four races she swam in with two individual wins and two relay victories. The freshman claimed both the 100 and 200 Backstroke events as the Bulldogs had the top three finishers in both events.
- Mendolicchio swept the Breaststroke events, winning the 100 in 1:05.25 and claiming the 200 with a time of 2:18.87. Lucy Davies and Emileigh Stock were 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the 100 Breast and Davies took third in the 200 Breast. Davies also had a win on Saturday, taking the top spot in the 200 Individual Medley in 2:08.99.
- Other Bulldog event winners included Kimberly Harbert in the 200 Butterfly, Osianna McReed in the 50 Freestyle, Katelin Britton in the 100 Free, and Zofia Niemczak in the 100 Fly. The 'Dogs had the top three finishers in six different individual events. The 200 Free was the only event in which the Roadrunners had the top time.
- Fresno State also picked up wins in both relay events. In the 200 Medley Relay, Cutler, Mendolicchio, Harbert, and McReed earned the win in 1:46.90 while the Bulldog 'B' team finished second. In the 400 Free Relay to close the meet, McReed, Niemczak, Cutler, and Britton had the top time of 3:34.68. Â
Diving Highlights
- Just four divers – two from each team – took part in the diving competition with the 'Dogs having the top two finishers in both events.
- On 3-meter, Sedillo won easily with a score of 315.15. Her teammate, Kelli Funk, was second at 273.90 while CSUB's Hannah Chernabaeff was third and Donna Rotella was fourth.
- The 1-meter competition had the exact same order of finish but less than a point separated Sedillo and Funk. Sedillo won with a 251.63 score, narrowly topping the 251.55 recorded by Funk. Chernabaeff was third at 221.85.
Notable
- The Bulldogs competed without two team members available. Swimmer Ugne Mazutaityte is on her way to Copenhagan to compete in the European Championships and diver Irina Nikolaeva was out due to injury.
