Fresno State Softball defeated Cal State Fullerton, 12-11, and fell to Texas Tech, 9-6, on Saturday
The 'Dogs went 2-3 at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, which included a 9-0 victory over Florida Gulf Coast on Friday and losses to Mississippi State, 4-1, and Florida Gulf Coast, 4-3, on Thursday. Senior Kierra Willis, sophomore Kamalani Dung and freshman Miranda Rohleder were each selected to the All-Tournament Team on Saturday night.
"It was a roller coaster of emotions in both games today," Fresno State head coach Linda Garza said. "Offensively, we did a great job. Unfortunately, our miscues on defense and failure to execute in those moments kept us from winning both games today.
"I hope the team understands how important it is to take care of the ball on defense and to make the routine plays. However, I'm confident our defense will get better. Having a young team, we are going to go through growing pains. It will be good to be home next weekend."
The Bulldogs return to Fresno for their home-opener on Thursday against Cal Poly at 7 p.m. PT to kick off the Bulldog Classic. The 'Dogs will also face No. 13 Minnesota, Idaho State and UC Davis.
How it happened against Cal State Fullerton
Fresno State junior Savannah McHellon began the day in the circle for the Bulldogs, facing a Cal State Fullerton team that was hungry for its fifth-straight win over the 'Dogs. The Titans came out swinging in the first inning, as three singles led to CSUF taking an early 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs would bite back in the bottom of the second, scoring five and owning a 5-1 lead. Senior Lindsey Willmon led the inning off with a double and Willis and sophomore Vanessa Hernandez took free passes to load the bases.
Freshman Maddi Hackbarth collected an RBI on a groundout, freshman Schuylar Broussard walked to reload the bases and junior Katie Castellon then earned an RBI on a groundout. Freshman Miranda Rohleder came up to the plate and singled up the middle to get an RBI of her own, followed by a two-run triple from freshman Kindra Hackbarth.
In the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs added some insurance runs as Broussard knocked a bases-loaded triple through the left side and sophomore Morgan Howe sent her home with a sacrifice fly to give the 'Dogs a 9-1 lead.
However, Fullerton answered back in a big way, scoring nine runs in the top of the fifth and taking a 10-9 lead. The Titans used nine hits, including three doubles and six singles to overcome the deficit.
McHellon (4.2 IP, 4 K's, 9 ER, 10 H, 4 BB) was replaced by Dung, who had just thrown a no-hitter the day before against Florida Gulf Coast. The Bulldogs wouldn't strike back until the bottom of the sixth and retake the lead after Willis walked with the bases loaded and Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly.
Victory was in the Bulldogs' grasp, but Fullerton came back with an RBI-single to tie the game 11-11. Finally, in the bottom of the eighth, Willmon was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, Willis walked and Hernandez hit a game-winning RBI-double.
Dung earned her fifth win of the season after pitching 3.1 innings with two strikeouts and allowing two runs on three hits and giving up four walks.
As a team, Fresno State was walked 11 times, the most for the team since April 8, 2015 against New Mexico when the Bulldogs took 12 free passes.
How it happened against Texas Tech
Fresno State was back at it Saturday evening as the Bulldogs looked to keep their offensive momentum going from the first game, however neither team would score until the third inning.
Texas Tech started things off by scoring two runs in the top of the inning, but was immediately answered by the 'Dogs when McHellon notched an RBI-double, Hernandez recorded a two-run double, and Maddi Hackbarth hit an RBI single to give Fresno State a 4-2 lead.
However, the Red Raiders responded with seven runs over the next three innings, taking a 9-4 lead. The Bulldogs scored two more in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI triple by Howe and an RBI single by Kindra Hackbarth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
Dung (5-2) notched six strikeouts in 5.0 innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits and three walks. McHellon spent 0.1 innings in the circle, but allowed two runs on two hits. Freshman Samantha Mejia closed the game out for the Bulldogs, allowing only one hit in 1.2 innings.
