Ducks best 'Dogs in conference opener 12-9

Fresno, Calif. – The Fresno State women's lacrosse team dropped a close game to MPSF foe Oregon 12-9 in its conference home opener, Sunday afternoon.
"We created a lot of opportunities for ourselves today that we just need to execute," said head coach Jessica Giglio. "Oregon is a good team, they came into the match today with a 2-0 conference record. They are a strong conference opponent and as a young team we need to finish possesions to beat the strong teams. I look forward to the rest of conference play to show everyone how much we've improved."
Five different Bulldogs scored during the game giving them a balanced offense. Kayla Galet, Marina Mayo, Tiffiny Wallace and Sarah Bloise each tacked on two goals. Ryleigh Bone rounded out scoring with one goal on the afternoon.
Shannon Williams led the offensive charge for Oregon with a game-high four goals.
The 'Dogs and Ducks started the game trading goals. The game was tied three times within the first five minutes of the first half.
Fresno State pulled ahead by two (5-3) when freshman Kayla Galet found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season with 14:07 left in the first half.
The Bulldogs were up 5-4 at halftime, after Laurel Maunder blocked an Oregon free position shot as time expired to hold the lead.
Oregon fired back in the second half tying the game 5-5 with 28:03 left in the contest.
Fresno State regained the lead one last time scoring back-to-back goals to make it 9-8 with 12:50 left to play.
The Ducks finished the game on a 4-0 run to secure a 12-9 win over the Bulldogs.
Freshman Laurel Maunder was in the cage for the Bulldogs, she recorded seven saves. Her record dropped to 3-1 on the season.
Freshman Marina Mayo recorded a team-high five shots and four ground balls.
Senior Kyliegh Westgarth had a team-high five draw controls for the Bulldogs.
As a team, the Bulldogs had a 7-4 advantage in saves, 21-15 advantage in ground balls and were 3-for-5 in free position shots.
Oregon recorded a 26-20 advantage in shots, 15-8 advantage in draw controls and had one fewer turnover than Fresno State with 16.
Both teams recorded 16 caused turnovers on the afternoon with strong defensive performances.

The Bulldogs continue their six-game homestand against Presbyterian College Friday, March 3 at 4 p.m. PT at the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
