'Dogs add Jessica Gilbert to Fresno State volleyball roster for 2017-18

FRESNO, Calif. – Junior Jessica Gilbert will join the Fresno State volleyball team for the 2017-18 academic year, as announced by head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell on Wednesday.
Gilbert arrives at Fresno State after spending two seasons at Eastern Washington University. A 2015 graduate from James C. Enochs High School in Modesto, Calif., she was a three-year varsity letter winner in volleyball.
As a senior in 2014, she was a team captain and helped lead the Eagles to the Modesto Metro Conference League championship finishing with 370 kills and a .402 hitting percentage. She earned First-Team All-League honors as a junior in 2013 and was a three-time Academic All-League honoree.
"We're bringing a local back to the Valley!," said Netherby-Sewell. "Jessica is excited to be a Bulldog and seems to fit right in. We like her eagerness to learn and become an elite player. She's unique too as she is an explosive slide attacker on the right that has range. She'll pose a big challenge to our current talent on the right because she's different and adds something to our team that we don't have."
Netherby-Sewell is also excited about Gilbert's blocking ability and her local roots, "We like her blocking eyes and understanding of how to stuff block on the pins. We are excited to add another strong offensive and defensive player to the roster and it's a bonus that she'll bring that local draw to our matches."
After helping Eastern Washington to a 14-14 record in 2015, while being teammates with current 'Dogs Haile Watson, the 5-11 right side hitter/outside hitter totaled 226 kills and 81 blocks and earned All-Tournament honors at the New Orleans Invitational.
As a sophomore in 2016, Gilbert added 233 kills and 53 blocks and picked up a pair of All-Tournament honors at the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Mississippi State and the following weekend at the Grand Canyon Tournament.
Gilbert collected 26 kills, 14 digs and five block assists in three matches at the Bulldog Invite and added 33 kills, five digs and seven block assists in three matches at the Grand Canyon Tournament.
Helping the Eagles to a 13-13 mark this past fall, Gilbert appeared in all 26 matches at EWU in 2016 starting 20 matches playing in 95 sets. She ranked second on the team in points (269.0), kills (233), kills per set (2.45) and blocks (53) while adding 60 digs.
She helped lead the Eagles to a seventh-place finish in the Big Sky conference as the Eagles fell in five sets to second-seeded Sacramento State at the Big Sky Tournament on Nov. 17. Gilbert had a season-high 16 kills twice in wins over Montana State and Eastern Kentucky.
With the addition of Gilbert, the Bulldogs have now added four new new student-athletes for 2017-18 adding Sydney Lostumo and Karina Felipe in November along with Reagan Leonard in February.
