2017 MW Championship Bracket
Schedule:
Fresno State will open up play at the 2017 Mountain West Championships in Las Vegas on Friday at 2 p.m. Seeded No. 2 for the first time since joining the conference, the Bulldogs will face the No. 7 seed Air Force. With the No. 2 seed, the Bulldogs earned a bye to the quarterfinals while the Falcons defeating No. 10 seed Colorado State 5-1 in the first round on Thursday afternoon.
Looking at the matchup:
- Fresno State heads into the tournament with a 14-8 record, having won nine of its last 11 matches.
- The Bulldogs are 4-0 all-time against the Falcons, and have outscored AFA 18-0 in their three matchups in the Mountain West.
- The 'Dogs last defeated the Falcons 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Mountain West Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
- Air Force enters the match with a 16-9 record in 2017 and were 2-3 in conference play.
- The Falcons are led by All-Mountain West players Chloe Forlini and TJ Fumagali. Forlini owns the school singles wins record with 107 while Fumagali passed Forlini's single-season wins record with 39. Fumagali is 39-3 on the year with a 27-0 record during the spring.
- With a 3-1 record against the West Division, Fresno State tied for the spot in the division this season with a UNLV.
- It was the fourth-straight season that the Bulldogs have claimed at least a share of the West Division crown after winning the last three outright.
- The 'Dogs are 22-3 in regular-season matches in the Mountain West since head coach Ryan Stotland took over the program prior to the 2012-13 season, including a 3-1 record this year in conference play.
- This season's loss at UNLV snapped a 19-match regular-season conference win streak that the 'Dogs held which dated back to Stotland's first season.
- Despite the regular-season record, the Bulldogs have gone 6-3 in four Mountain West tournaments.
- On April 26, Katerina Stloukalova was named Mountain West Freshman of the Year after posting a 24-15 overall record and was 13-8 during the dual season.
- This marked the third time in five season that the Bulldogs have claimed the Freshman of the Year award as Stloukalova joined Rana Sherif Ahmed and Mayar Sherif Ahmed who won the awards in 2013 and 2015, respectively.
- Stloukalova played all but one of her matches during the dual season in the No. 1 position.
- The top freshman in the conference, she was also one of the top players in the MW, defeating both then-No. 41 Carol Yang and then-No. 98 Claudia Herrero in straight sets.
- Stloukalova was the only player in the conference this season to defeat Herrero, the 2017 MW Player of the Year and 2016 ITA Mountain Regional champion.
- The Brno, Czech Republic native finished the season strong, posting a 7-1 record in her last 10 matches.
- Sophomore Emma Wilson joined Stloukalova on this year's All-MW singles team. Wilson finished the season with 23 wins, the second-most on the team after seeing little time on the court during the 2016 spring season.
- Since late February, Wilson began teaming up with Georgia Lawson in doubles play. With a 6-4 record at No. 1 position, the English duo were named to the All-MW doubles team.
- With just one senior on this year's team, underclassmen account for just under 88.3 percent of the Fresno State's singles wins this season. The freshman class alone has accounted for 64.2 percent of the team's wins.
- Freshman Katerina Stloukalova leads the team with 24 wins while sophomore Emma Wilson is second with 23 wins on the year. Freshman Juliane Triebe is right behind her with 22.
- Triebe holds the team's top record in dual matches at 14-6 while Stloukalova (13), Wilson (12) and Bykova (10) all have double-digit win totals during the dual season.
