Ugne Mazutaityte to compete in World University Games in Taipei

TAIPEI, Taiwan – Fresno State junior Ugne Mazutaityte continues her summer of competition on the international stage as she swims in the World University games starting on Sunday in Taipei.

The competition, which is the largest multi-sport event in the world outside of the Olympics, is held every two years and brings together the best university age student-athletes from all of the world to compete in 22 different sports.

Mazutaityte last competed at the FINA World Championships in Budapest in July. The Lithuanian record holder in the 100m and 200m backstroke, Mazutaityte will compete in each of those events and in the 50 Back in Taiepei. She is representing Lithuania in the World University Games for the first time.

"It's hard coming off the World Championships with only a three-week rest and she's been at home," Fresno State head swimming coach Jeanne Fleck said. "She got sick after she set the Lithuanian record in the 100 back (at FINA) so she was a little disappointed with how she did in the 200. She would like to go a best time in the 200 at this meet but she knows she has to come back here on the 29th so she has a lot on her mind."

Mazutaityte, who holds Fresno State program records in the both the 100 and 200 back, topped her previous Lithuanian record with a time of 1 minute, 2.02 seconds three weeks ago in Budapest. She moved from 40th to 27th in the world in the 100m back leading Lithuania, a country of nearly 3 million people.

"She's excited and we're excited about her representing Lithuania and Fresno State at the World University games," Fleck added. "She will take some time off while we get everyone else going, which she won't like, but she will need to have a little rest. We want her to be fresh when she starts our season."

In Taipei Mazutaityte will swim in prelims of the 200m back on Sunday, the 100m back on Tuesday, and the 50m back next Thursday. Prelims and semifinal swims will be held on the same day for each event with finals on the following day, meaning that she potentially could swim on six straight days, Sunday through next Friday, should she reach the finals in each event.

Fresno State will also be represented in the women's water polo competition at the World University Games as assistant coach Caitlin Haskell will be on the staff for Team USA.
