XC Preview: ‘Dogs head to Sacramento for Capital Cross Challenge

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State will make the drive up to Sacramento this weekend for its third meet of the season as the Bulldogs will compete in the Capital Cross Challenge on Saturday morning at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.
"We are looking forward to racing this weekend in Sacramento," head coach Christine Engel said. "It is a great course and played host to the NCAA West Region Championships last year. It will be the first 6k and 8k for the women's and men's teams, respectively, this season. It will also be three weeks since our last competition, so we are looking forward to seeing the overall progress of the team from the last block of training."
CAPITAL CROSS CHALLENGE
DATE: September 30, 2017
TIME: 9:50 a.m. – Men's 8K; 10:30 a.m. – Women's 6K
LOCATION: Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, Sacramento, Calif.
RESULTS: Will be available at gobulldogs.com following the meet
BULLDOGS LINEUP
Racing on the women's side for the Bulldogs on Saturday morning will be Kathleen Dunne, Ellie Leather, Cristal Rivera, Lydia Scott, Sami Shields and Annelis Walker. The men's participants will be Jose Aispuro, Joel Gonzalez, Matthew Founds, Alekos Mitchel, Efren Reyes, Michael Viano and Ryan Walker.
HOW THE 'DOGS WILL SHAPE UP IN 2017
The men's squad returns four of its seven runners from last season, including seniors Efren Reyes and Joel Gonzalez. Newcomers to the roster are junior Jose Aispuro, and freshmen Matthew Founds and Alekos Mitchel. The lone returners on the women's side are seniors Annelis Walker and Cristal Rivera (did not compete in 2016) as the team will welcome four new runners in freshmen Ellie Leather and Lydia Scott, sophomore Sami Shields, and graduate transfer Kathleen Dunne who comes over from Long Beach State.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Bulldogs will travel to the Bay Area to race in the Bronco Invitational on Oct. 14 in Sunnyvale, Calif. The meet will be held at Baylands Regional Park and hosted by Santa Clara.
