Swimmers to compete in CSUB Sprint Classic Friday

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State will be one of five schools to take part in the CSUB Sprint Classic on Friday. The meet, which will be hosted by CSU Bakersfield, is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Joining Fresno State and the host Roadrunners will be fellow MW school San Jose State as well as Big West programs Hawaii and UC Santa Barbara. The 'Dogs will be facing San Jose State for the second time this season after the Spartans took part in the Chick-Fil-A Invitational in Fresno Oct. 5-6.

The CSUB Sprint Classic meet program will consist of mostly sprint races, with 50 yard sprints in all four strokes as well as a 100 IM and 400 IM. Relays will be held in the 200 Medley, 200 Freestyle, and 800 Freestyle.

Fresno State placed third among six teams in the season-opening Chick-Fil-A Invitational, finishing ahead of Washington State, San Jose State, and Air Force. Every Bulldog swimmer competed in three or four individual races as well as multiple relays to kick off the 2018-19 season.

Senior Osianna McReed led the 'Dogs in the freestyle sprints, posting the top times on the team in the 50 Free and 100 Free. Freshman Brenda Diaz Martinez led the 'Dogs in four races, posting the top times on the team in the 200 Free, 500 Free, 200 IM, and 400 IM.

Senior Ugne Mazutaityte won the 200 Back in the Chick-Fil-A Invitational and also had the top Bulldog time in the 100 Back. Fellow Fresno State record-holders Manuela Mendolicchio and Zofia Niemczak have the top times in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke and butterfly, respectively.

After Friday's competition the Bulldogs will host a pair of meets, facing Nevada in the Aquatics Center next Saturday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. before hosting Fresno Pacific and Pomona-Pitzer the following Saturday, Nov. 3, at noon.
